Conlang bio: Sindarin

Conlang bio: Sindarin | Language: Sindarin; History: Sindarin was created to be a "sister language" to Quenya. While many words are obvious cognates, the two languages are mutually unintelligible. It originally was called Goldogrin (Gnomish), because it was the language that the gnomes (later to be called the Noldor) spoke while in Beriliand. After Tolkien's death, it was further developed by linguist David Salo for the Lord of the Rings movies. Creator: J. R. R. Tolkien; Purpose: While I can get no solid evidence for this, I believe Tolkien created Sindarin after he started work on The Silmarillion, so he could create a more realistic linguistic environment for Quenya. Example: A Elbereth Gilthoniel, silivren penna míriel o menel aglar elenath! (O Queen of stars who kindleth them, the firmament slants down, it's stary host shimmering like jewels!) | image tagged in black blank, lord of the rings, language | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

Conlang bio: Quenya

Conlang bio: Quenya | Conlang bio; Language: Quenya; Creator: J. R. R. Tolkien; History: First conceptions were written down in a journal that Tolkien kept with him while serving in WW1. He later revised it multiple times, trying to get it to sound "right". Unfortunately, he died before he could finish it. Purpose: Originally just for fun, but Tolkien later assigned it to the elves of Middle-Earth to speak it. Example: Aiya, Eärendil, elenion ancalima! Conlang bio: the Black Speech of Mordor

Conlang bio: the Black Speech of Mordor | History: Black Speech was created to be the antithesis of Quenya. While Quenya is a beautiful, flowing language, Black Speech is harsh, agglutinating, and difficult to pronounce. Interestingly enough, you can find certain elements of Elvish in Black Speech (for example, Uruk (Black Speech)=Orch (Sindarin)= Orc (English)). It took on two forms: the ancient, "pure," form, as originally devised by Sauron, and the debased form used by some of the orcs. It was later further developed by linguist David Salo for the Hobbit movies. Language: Black Speech; Creator: J. R. R. Tolkien; Purpose: It was created to be the primary language of Mordor. In the story, Sauron created it in an unsuccessful attempt to unite his minions under one common language. Intriguingly, Tolkien disliked it, and always felt a little uneasy when writing in it, which is why it has such a limited vocabulary in it's original form. Example: Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul (One Ring to rule them all, one Ring to find them, one Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them). | image tagged in black blank, lord of the rings, language | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

Conlang bio: River City Clan

Conlang bio: River City Clan | History: River City Clan is a language spoken by, funnily enough, the River City Clan, who were a group of Neanderthals living in the stone age in the book The Spirit Well, by Stephen R. Lawhead. It has an extremely limited vocabulary, since the Clan usually communicated via telepathy. Language: River City Clan; Creator: Stephen R. Lawhead; Purpose: within the story, the language acts as a means by which Kit Livingstone communicates with the River City Clan, since he doesn't share their telepathic abilities. Example: En-ul e-na (The Old One drinks water) | image tagged in black blank, language | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
