What do I do if I see a spammer? I'm getting spam attacked by a guy with 2 accounts!

I'd really appreciate it if you would take the time to read and consider what i have to say here. (Sorry about the length :D)

So me and a bunch of other users have been having another discussion about spam and such, and we've come to a few conclusions. I don't mean any disrespect, and I'm not trying to say you or the other mods are doing anything wrong. This is just a few hopefully helpful critiques and some suggestions for improvement, coming from someone who uses this site every day and wants to help make it more fun and better for everyone.

1) The flag button helps, but it's far from enough. It seems to be more of a stop-gap measure, and we need something that can take care of spammers as soon as they appear. That means one thing: more, and more active, moderators.
2) The "comment reputation" thing has backfired. It does more harm to legit users than it does to spammers.
3) Having meme comments require a minimum point level was helpful when it was first introduced, but now spammers have begun adopting a "time-bomb" strategy, acting legit until they have enough points, then unleashing a storm of spam comments. Just increasing the limit isn't an option, because legit users are frustrated by it already, and if it were to be increased, that would only get worse, with little or no reduction in the amount of spam.

All of the measures that have been implemented up until now, while they have been somewhat helpful, have been temporary, merely efforts to stem the tide. We need something that can end the spam as soon as it begins, and there's only one thing that can do that: more moderators.

I understand that moderating and maintaining a website is a lot of work, and that you and the other mods are doing what you can, but the reality is, it's not enough. I mean no disrespect by that, and I realize you probably have a lot to do to keep this site running. That being said, promoting a few active, loyal, and trustworthy users to mods would be beneficial to both you and the Imgflip community. The new mods would take responsibility of keeping the spam under control, leaving you and the other original mods free to work on and improve the site in other ways. As the new mods would be active users, they would be able to find and eliminate spammers before they become a problem.

All in all, even 4 or 5 new mods would be incredibly effective in controlling spam, and once the spam is eliminated, everyone will have more fun on this site, and that's what we're here for.

I think that the flag button is the most negative of all.

I saw a user saying that people care when a a black person gets killed by a white person. But when (n word)s kill white people noone cares.
Well, he got 4 downvotes. A person called him a racist and threatened to flag him. The other day his account was deleted.
When in reality he wasn't even racist. He only stated a fact!

This is my opinion.

That's the problem with giving all users the kind of power the flag button gives you. It's a powerful tool, and one of the only ways we have to combat spammers, but it has huge potential for abuse...

Thank you for the thought-out feedback. We have thought about the possibility of more moderators several times, and it seems to be something most growing communities have. Automating as much as possible is our goal, but it's not always easy in a community environment. We would need to build a few more tools for new moderators to be successful, which may take some time. I will think seriously about this request though.

It would be great to be able to automate spam control, but unfortunately, there's only so much automatic systems can do. No matter what sort of systems are put in place, people will find ways around them, meaning there will always be a need for human involvement.

This is coming from a simple user, with no web development experience. As such, I have no idea what's actually possible, I can only share what I've noticed from a user's perspective in the middle of it all. Thanks for listening to what I had to say :)

Thank you for considering Clockwork's feedback. And I agree that we do need more moderators for this site. No matter how much you'all update this site, trolls and spammers are always finding fast ways to spam again (such as porn). And this flagging thing didn't work out totally well because the porn doesn't get deleted that fast. And most of us are under 18 on this site and porn is not allowed, neither is sexual harassment and everything else trolls and spammers do. So the only thing you'all can do is: More mods. We can handle this. I am actually a moderator of a forum in a popular chat website and moderating is a piece of cake for me on that website. More moderators on this site will solve this whole problem.

I think that more MODS are needed. Yes, the flag button is working, but it takes a while for users to catch it and we all have to see that stuff for around thirty minutes. The flag button is good though, just not enough.

I agree with clockwork, the comment reputation has backfired and it's not necessary. The porn spammers act all nice before attacking and their comment reputation is fine.

The hard thing is that I don't want porn spammers to get more points when they act nice. But then I'm being very mean to new users. Now I can never tell which new users are fake or legit.

I think an auto-detecting porn censor would be great. Even if it is just for new users. If there were any way to do that.

The email verification will allow the spammers only have as many accounts as they do email addresses, but that doesn't stop them from creating emails. I think that if an account gets banned, it's email gets banned too.

I also agree with mememaker, there are many adolescents (I am one) and porn is unacceptable for our ages. This isn't a porn website, so porn shouldn't be allowed (which it isn't). So you guys are doing a good job moderating, just the number of trolls are pretty high.

I feel like someone DOESN'T WANT original content - which any created collage must be - unless already done exactly the same way., by another.

A mod may have guessed that that image does not have original content because the original content that was created with imgflip was at the bottom and it had not been stitched together using imgflip itself. You can avoid this by using the meme generator to add the new content, such as the bottom-most image and the meme text on it. Only letting through original content, and doing it accurately for thousands of images per day is not an easy problem. I've marked this one approved.

Even putting a period over the left eye as I do, or adding scumbag habberdashery - creates a new work in a legal sense. I realize I use other complete memes as elementz - but not usually by themselves.

For any other users reading this, the offender was TheMemeMaker2, and his offenses were somewhat extensive and went back quite a ways. As I mentioned, we have no tolerance for porn spamming and we will ban any associated accounts, email addresses, etc.

It's never just one person. There is an endless supply of people on the internet willing to trash a website for their own enjoyment. Fortunately for us, this person pushed many boundaries, forcing us to create a more robust comment system.

So, in a way...HE HELPED US?!

I wouldn't say so. We had to take draconian measures to stop the madness. Which wasn't really caused by a lot of people.

In my calculations there have been 3-4 actual spammers on this site; GayPerson/RandomPerson/Masterness/Pitty./goodiez/bookiez (TheMemeMaker2), IceCube/DrDre (HitlerSocks. He apologized), ISISmemes/ISISISISbaby/I_AM_A_PROUD_ISIS_SUPPORTER and Memedank69/Memetank45/Mememang45/Memeshank45.

These 4 people are behind the spam and control MOST of the spam accounts. With Mememaker and Hitler out of our sights this site's comment system will be improved, immediately.
