Please name ONE state that has improved in education since Cater created the Department of education! In 1979 when the department of education was created the US was a world leader in education, today we are about 30th over all, On the bright side we spend more money on education per student then any other nation and our students can name more genders than students in any other nation.

Oh ,and while you are goggling " states that have improved education in the past 35 years", please tell me where in the Constitution the federal government has any authority over education.

Graduation rates were steadily rising as people were no longer engaged in labor intensive agriculture, construction, etc., and became urbanized.

The children were no longer required to work in support of the family and good ol uncle

Later it became a crime for a child to not attend.

The states made the truancy laws that would charge the parents with the crime because the DoE would dock the state's funding for absent students.

Also docked funding for kids not progressing to the next grade and/or passing standardized testing - "no child left behind".

Think education has been getting worse since the creation of the Department of Education?
Imagine how much worse it would be WITHOUT it.

1) the department of education pre-existed 1978, Carter elevated it to its own cabinet position. We do not have a federal system of education. Each state is responsible for executing on the standards set by the DoE. We literally have over 50 different completely independent school systems. The biggest thing the DoE does is make sure that all students have equal access to education.

Like, for example, special needs students in poor rural districts have the same resources available for special needs students in rich suburban districts.

2) What metrics do you want to use to show improvement? How about# of people who graduated high school?

Let's look at Alabama. In 1990 66.9% of the population 25 and older had a high school diploma (or higher). In 1996, that climbed 75.6%. By 2010 that number has risen to 87.93%.

Boy, that DoE sure is helpful.

Look at ol Wes Verginny.

91% graduated...but:

66% did NOT meet math standards
58% did NOT meet reading standards
72% did NOT meet science standards

Graduation rates mean nothing.

They graduate but can't do basic math, read, or do sciency stuff like demand "vaccination" or figure out how lip gloss and a skirt turns a boy into a girl that needs a tampon.

I reckon that "No Child Left Behind" business was all it was cracked up to be.

BTW: Alabama's grad rate is declining. Expert estimates expect grad rates to fall by 13%+/- over the next 10 years nation wide.

I wouldn't worry 'bout that too much.

America was built by men that had little to no formal education.

🎢 I wish politicians would look out for miners 🎢

🎢And not just minors on an island somewhere 🎢

Yeah, a republican state where education is declining. Not shocking at all.

The natural extension of all that "don't trust experts, don't trust schools, you don't need an education" y'all have been going on for at least a decade.

It's almost like parents have a strong impact on their children. And when the parents don't value education and expertise, why would their children?

California has the LOWEST graduation rate in the ENTIRE United States.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but ain't that bunch democrat AF?

What is your excuse for that - racism or misogyny?

No, it doesn't.

Imagine if you'd taken the time to go verify something instead of typing this then replying to yourself twice. Just take a moment and imagine what that would be like.

Because then you'd be able to say things like "California is at the national average of 87%, beating out red states like Idaho and Alaska. But we don't know about Oklahoma because the OK state refuses to publish its graduation rate. Which probably means it's really bad."

I know you won't, but anyone else can check the rates here: https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator/coi/high-school-graduation-rates

It's a nice interactive map.

But I do want you to imagine what it would be like to have verified information rather than going with how you feel. Maybe, someday soon, you'll actually try it.

I look forward to that day.

Many words will not fill in the hole you dug yourself.

That and they didn't make much sense.

Kinda all over the place.

WV had one of, if not THE, highest graduation rates; 4+ points higher than California (which you just stated is "average").

Yet the majority of WV graduates are not able to read, write, or do arithmetic because the schools are only interested in meeting the requirements that bring in the federal dollars - attendance, standardized test scores, and making sure "no child is left behind" (by passing them to the next grade even though they lack knowledge and understanding).

You can't be indoctrinated if you aren't there.

All they teach is the standardized test.

Temporary memorization is not learning.

Ignorant people become superstitious people that believe anything...like boys need tampons or there will be no more elections.

YOU countered this is because WV is a "red state".

I countered that California is a "blew state", yet California graduates less students from their high schools.

You would have done better to argue proficiency of CA students vs WV students.

But ya didn't.

Just offered some Oklaho.a straw man.

So, you're mad that West Virginia, despite having the highest graduation rate, has the lowest quality of education?

Which is reasonable. That's a reasonable thing to get upset about.

Then, if that is the case, you should get mad at the right people. Because there is no federal education system. There are 50+ completely independent school systems. The Federal government sets some of the standards, not all, but the states/territories/department of defense are entirely responsible for the policies and procedures those schools follow.

So, if you are mad, get mad at the Republican run state building a system that just passes kids through and doesn't actually educate them. And if you're mad about the "No Child Left Behind" policies, get mad at the right people.

Republicans.

California has far more rigorous standards and requirements.

West Virginia, in comparison, like other similar states, well let's just say their ambitions educational-wise are at par with their ambitions career-wise. It's not exactly known as an epicenter of academic success for a reason. Or two.
