The unfunded liabilities is $219.7 trillion.
That is $650,275 per person.

Congress just keeps kicking the can down the road.

On October 23, 1981, America's national debt crossed the $1 trillion mark. It was an unprecedented, staggering, and earth-shattering figure.Oct 23, 2023

Any President who vetoes Congress' spending bills will get blamed for shutting down the government (as if that would be a bad thing).
2 ups, 2mo
Indeed! I would have a great deal of respect for any president (yes, ANY) who let the federal govt shut down instead of letting it continue as the bloated, festering, inefficient and wasteful institution it is, which does not serve we the people.

And when it does shut down with only the critical / vital people needed to keep it functioning? Keep those people and get rid of everyone else.

Start there.

Remember who added trillions to that debt?

And did they do that through overriding a president’s veto?

Serious question for you here, Mrs. Faustus... if Trump had done what I wanted, which was NOT shutting down the economy, but instead focusing on covid prevention for those most vulnerable (the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, etc.) and had NOT thrown all that money at people, what would people like you and the jackals in the media have done to him?

Try to answer honestly.

But I doubt you (or any liberal... this isn't about you per se) can answer honestly. Because if you did, you'd have to admit that it wasn't Trump's fault. Sure, he could have shown some real balls and leadership by doing what I mentioned, but you know 100% in your heart that the media would have crucified him. The sleazy dems and rinos in congress would have kept impeaching him until it stuck. So, did he have a choice? Ultimately, yes. Practically, no.

Instead, dems and rinos figured that handing out freshly printed money would go over well because giving money to people who don't work is sort of their ethos.

What makes it even worse is that anybody who actually paid attention to the science, knew we didn't have to do all that. To be told that "following the science", aka the scientific method, meant NOT being able to question the prevailing scientific opinion that one political party was forcing on the country, was not only insulting, but 100% anti-science. The most basic aspect of science is being able to ask questions, but the Dems did their best to put down that particular component of the 1st Amendment.

Then again, if we hadn't wasted all that money (Trump *and* Biden) what would the democrats have to complain about as far as Trump? The 1.4% inflation rate? The booming economy? Jobs for anybody who wanted one? Relative peace in the world? No wars started on his watch? FREEDOM!!!?

Even democrats, who survive only by complaining about what's wrong and promising things to fix what's wrong with money we don't have, could not have complained about Trump in any kind of meaningful way (aka a way that would allow a demented fool to win an election) without covid, and everybody who is honest knows it.

That's why trillions of $$ in debt were added recently.

Odd thing though, the demonrats who always make that point about Trump, don't say a word when Biden piles on to our debt at the rate of roughly $6.66 BILLION PER DAY. Which works out to roughly $2.41 trillion in the last year alone.

Where's your snarky comment about that?

First of all, let me clarify that I was talking about the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and not COVID.

But let’s talk about COVID. Yes, I commend Trump for Operation Warp Speed. But as far as the 1.4% inflation and gas less than a buck fifty, that can be attributed to the essential shutdown of the economy. People were spending far less on gasoline, travel, vacations, and focusing on the essentials (and TP, what a dilemma that was). Less economic activity means less economic growth, and therefore lower prices and inflation. You tend to think that less inflation marks a good economy, but the economy in 2020 was stagnant at best and, without Warp Speed, would have collapsed. But to be clear here (and this will also aid a later point), I do not blame Trump for this stagnant economy.

Now let’s talk the post COVID economy under Biden. Has it been the best economy? Heck no. But that’s less of circumstance brought out by the change in leadership and more of the situation of the time. After all, with the economy restarting, many corporations and companies saw fit to increase prices to make up for the loss of profits over lockdown. This, Alongside poorly timed money-printing, gave way for the perfect storm of high inflation. And when the news reports that inflation is up, corporations see that as a green light to continue to increase prices, as it gives them the perfect scapegoat but worsens the situation for everyone else.

I’m not saying Biden had nothing to do with the inflation spike, but ask yourself: Would we be in the same situation if Trump has his second term now? How much control does a president and their administration have over the economy and world events? I know I once blamed Trump for the COVID disaster, but talking to more conservative family members and people like you have helped me realize that no, Trump didn’t have much control over any of the situation, not the virus spreading nor the stagnant economy. And I genuinely thank you for helping me realize that. But, by the same token, it means that Biden also does not hold absolute power over the economy. Whether it’s good news or bad news, the president should not be the main focus of praise nor the scapegoat.

Lastly, the deficit thing. I’ll be clear, I don’t care much about the deficit. So why do I criticize Trump for it and not Biden? This may be a tad petty, but for a Democrat, adding to the debt is par for the course. But a Republican who promises to balance the budget? That marks him as a liar, somehow even more of one than your regular DC Decision Maker. And pairing this with his Kindergarten-Class-President-esque campaign promises, I don’t trust that he has the plans nor influence to actually dig us out of this hole.

So this wasn’t exactly a snarky comment, nor the one you were probably hoping for. But I genuinely appreciate these sparse moments of open dialog on this site. It gives me hope for our future as a country.

Election Day is coming up. I know we’ll likely vote for different candidates, but for the sake of democracy and moving forward, go out and vote!

What veto are you talking about?

Exactly. There was no veto for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. That means it was signed by the sitting president.

Never ceases to amaze me how many people think that they are not taxed enough. You know, you can always voluntarily pay more if you want.

Maybe read the thing beyond the title. Unless you’re belching money in your sleep those tax cuts aren’t for you and me.
1 up, 2mo
Funny how people like you think the tax cuts aren’t for you because more wealthy people end up with more after-tax income you do. Even though the wealthy pay a higher tax rate.

Not to mention all the dem governors who implemented lockdowns to ruin the economy. As you know, Newsom ignored his lockdown order to celebrate his birthday party in a restaurant.

Greasy Gavin Nussolini is, imo, one of the worst governors we've ever had in Taxifornia. Perhaps even in the entire nation. And that is really saying something.

Hey I’m just trying to appeal to his anti-vax side and pointing out his own hypocrisy. Operation Warp Speed is one of the only things I give Trump credit for, and I highly doubt we’ll see circumstances like that again in the next four years.

Its a pretty clear consensus that it was from a lab. Even if it was accidental, that means they are doing some pretty sketchy shit with viruses.

Define “pretty clear consensus.” I’m not saying it wasn’t possible that it was lab made, but I’d like to see some sources on that

I used to be able to bring up lists and lists of Science and Nature web sites that confirmed Covid was an unnatural mutation, but now when I try the links that I had in my saves from 2022, they are gone, seems like damage control, I am not a conspiracy guy but when a country like china has so much power and sway over the world, things that make them look bad disappear all too often.
