There is no wound on his ear or any real blood to indicate he was struck. That is a prop application that dried up, and a very poorly job at that. There is no splattered blood on his white collar shirt or in his hair to indicate he was struck.

He lied at the convention and said when he brought his hand down from his ear it was covered in blood. There isn't a drop of blood on his right hand.
