As my older brother and I were approaching Vietnam Era draft age my WWII combat veteran father told us that it was a F-ing political mess and stupid war venture and that if we got maimed or killed over there it would be meaningless. He then told us that he would not condemn us if we elected instead to head to Canada when our inevitable -- because we were blue collar -- draft notices came in.
After some discussion between us my brother and I decided that we would simply obey the draft notice instead and take our chances. I don't condemn anyone for trying to get out of going to Vietnam, but also I think that they should be willing to pay the consequences if they did so illegally.
