Less government officals is a good thing if the ones that we have already actually did their jobs like the individuals that found this lab. They will be added over a span of 10 years at which point we will have roughly the same amount of IRS employees that we used to in 2010... to deal with slightly more taxpayers than they did at that time. (Assuming our population will have increased from 2010 going into 2030.)

And not all of these new jobs will be enforcement type "agents". Some will be IT people and people answering phones. In 2022 only 1 out of 8 phonecalls from taxpayers to the IRS were able to reach an actual IRS employee. Idk if you've ever dealt with trying to get an actual human on a support phone call before but it can be quite a nightmare....

Decreasing their staff would make it worse for the people calling who need help... And enable more rich tax cheats to get away with it... And if stuff isn't getting done (or getting done at a snail's pace) due to understaffing, that might also make it appear on the surface like they're not doing their jobs.
