When people went to places like the soviet union, the government would orchestrate a big fake show to promote the idea that things were going well.
Tourists could only stay at specific hotels, only visit specific areas with a guide and government workers would frequently work as actors for it, wearing nice clothes and carrying empty shopping bags, sit at fake cafes (etc) and walk past/around the tourists to make the situation in russia look normal..
North Korea does this too.

Now tourists are generally smart enough to see the fakery and brush it off for what it obviously is. However sometimes tourists are extra stupid and buy into it...in fact they're often so stupid they call themselves bernie sanders

In Michael Moore's movie "Sicko", he brought several chronically ill 9-11 former emergency workers to a luxury, "Free To All" Cuban hospital in Havana, where the Government made a big show about treating them. It turns out that, when ordinary Cubans saw the movie and tried to go to this hospital, they were told it was only for sports celebrities and high Communist Party officials.

One notices that as soon as the collective political Left consolidated their TOTAL control of all public educational systems in the United States they diluted the teaching of history -- with social 'science' and other garbage -- so that students would get the idea that Marxism/Communism is a misunderstood system and really is filled with pretty rainbows and sweet smelling unicorn farts.

Oh man, don't get me started telling you how great my childhood was growing in Cuba, one of the few true communist countries. But, instead, listen to your college teacher, his reading has more credibility than my personal life experience.
