Most gun owners are good and law-abiding citizens. They own weapons for a variety of reasons and never end up on the wrong side of the law. I am not anti-gun, just anti-assault weapon. Unfortunately, it seems to be the weapon of choice for "bad guys."

The NRA was the first national organization to allow membership to all people regardless of race. They used to be known primarily for their gun safety programs for school aged children. Now they are known for opposing Assault Rifle bans, after school shootings. The first Assault Weapon I saw was an M-16, when I was in the Army. I was issued an M-14, because the M-16s (assault rifles) were restricted for use in Viet Nam and for training for those on their way to Viet Nam. It was illegal for private citizens to own them at that time.

The AR15 was available to the public since the beginning. Even full auto M16 was and is available to the public, just as long as one passed Federal checks and paid the $200 tax.
I can buy a full auto firearm at any time. I can pass their checks and I can pay their tax. The problem is the availability and the price. One can only own a full auto firearm that was manufactured before 1986. They are very expensive.Even the very worst full auto firearms sell in the 5 figures. An M16 sells for at least $20k or more depending on manufacturering date and condition. An MP5, $35k.

The US Army M-16 was an Automatic Weapon in 1968. In 1968 the general public was not able to buy such weapons. At that time they were considered to be like "Tommy-guns," and Machine Guns. In 1986 the law that allows their sale, if manufactured prior to 1986 went into effect. I don't keep track of such things, but I am sure that some court ruling made buying automatic weapons legal happened before this law passed. I never mentioned the AR-15, which I understand to be a non-automatic version of the M-16. So, how can I be a liar about something I didn't say anything about?

The M16 has always been a full auto, or “selective fire”, if you prefer…even before 1968.

According to what I have read, Colt developed and manufactured the AR-15 in the late 1950s. The version of the weapon adopted by the Armed Forces for use in 1962, was designated by DoD as the M-16. My reference to 1968 was my first encounter with an assault weapon. I was told by my training officer that only certain people and not the general public at-large could legally own M-16s and similar weapons. Not everyone could pass the BGC necessary. I never questioned his insights. Nor do I now.

It is the current culture of "assault weapons," marketed like the Mustang, that I think has caused this problem. Any gun can be a deadly weapon and deserves to be handled with care that respects that potential. Assault rifles are designed to kill human beings. A casual approach to wide ownership of such weapons most probably has led to their misuse as civilian killing weapons. A broad variety of other weapons would, and should, be available to gun enthusiasts after an assault rifle ban.

Hmmm… I’ve owned one for 30 years and have never assaulted anyone with. Neither have the millions and millions of other law abiding owners of the AR. I, and many others refer to it as a Defense Rifle. That is what we own them for.
They are also excellent in the control of evasive pests, such as feral hogs. You will never legally stop the sale and ownership of the AR or it’s variants.
