Probably because a majority of police officers aren’t paid to stop crimes but rather to bill citizens, by way of excessive fines, for either misdemeanors both real and imaginary.
True, sometimes police officers do occasionally stop a real criminal but have you ever been to a crime ridden neighborhood and tried to call the police for help? It takes them hours to respond, if they respond at all.
They don’t come not because some Democrat refuses to pay them adequately, it’s because cops got better things to do than get killed.
That said, I do agree that liberals who said Defund the Police was dumb. Even in the context of redistributing taxpayer money to other social services. The whole reason why cops rely on some kind of fine quota is just to pay the bills. But even some democrats proposed raising police pay in exchange to the end their use of excessive fines. Which is a bit more than I can say for Republicans who think the system is working pretty well as is.
It is not.
There does need to be some kind of reform in how police conduct themselves and if threatening their pay got their attention, than it was smarter than any whining by similarly brain-dead conservatives who think the government should only do something if a Democrat is in charge.
