According to the DoD they did it three times but did not go into details on dates and times. To do so would tell the Chinese more than we want them to know about our ability to track their efforts. My late Brother Jim, worked for NSA doing electronic spying on the Chinese. He told me once that this type of incursion is designed to cause "chatter." From that chatter, one gets information on military and spy capabilities. Donald Trump could have approved shooting these down and chose to not do so.

Well the DoD left out an important bit of info (shoutout to RunawayTrain and AmericanViking for already discussing this). Trump admin. didn't know about the balloons because the DoD hadn't figured out the balloons had been in US airspace until AFTER Trump was out of office. Methinks the DoD needs to get its act together.

Also, are you sure that the version of what happened is not being projected through the lens of the National Security Act of 1947? I have read many accounts of National Security Briefers, reporting that Trump did not want their information. A "cover story," about these balloons being discovered years after they were no longer in the air, is more palatable to the powers that be, than "He wasn't paying attention." If I were an analyst for a hostile, I would recalibrate my analyses based on that info/
