You need a better understanding behind the reactionary mind... they don't truly desire smaller government. Even with today's conservatives, especially Jordan Peterson, they reminisce about former hierarchical structures, for example monarchism and other institutions (patriarchy for example), and want to preserve these things despite them being inherently oppressive.
