I was a GySgt (E-7) in the Marine Corps. We were in the process of moving to our new duty station. We had just bought our first house and I had taken a few weeks leave to get things unpacked and set up. I was up early like normal, getting my coffee with the news on when they broke in with the news about the first plane. Then the second plane hit and I knew it was on. I let the wife and kids sleep in because I knew that our world had just changed. Called in to what was to be my new unit to find out what I should do - check in now? Wait and see? Turns out that the base was on full lock down and nobody knew what to expect so they told me to just sit tight.
That day I knew we were in war and thought that I would go eventually but that never happened. Both my MOS and unit were not exactly the pointy end of the spear so we never deployed. I retired 3 years later in 2004. Lots of friends affected by it, obviously, and I think about them a lot. Story old as time, and both parties own it, but the military did their job but the politicians wouldn't get out of their way.
