I felt similarly about the Bush Jr. administration. Blamed it for spoiling my 20's, until I realized all we see are symptoms and not the illness causing them. The illness is...I don't know, a feedback loop between the shxt we output and the shxt we consume? Maybe it's a feature and not a bug. Either way, things are getting increasingly awful. As much as I detested Dubya, I definitely would have been happy to have him back after Trump took office.
Increasing polarization leads to increasingly extreme political stances, resulting in increased polarization. Sure social media is riddled with bots, but their effect is like alcohol. It's just bringing latent impulses to the surface. If the resulting division does us in, it was always our destiny to tear ourselves apart. This is just speeding things along.
