Yeah, those native Americans sure killed a lot of settlers after selling them their land. Talk about colonialism.

Talk about downplaying the experiences Native Americans had to go through.

You mean when they routinely raided colonial lands that were bought from the natives with alcohol and beads? See the Native Americans were extremely tribal and violent constantly at war with each other and the colonials. To them the colonials were just one more tribe competing for resources.

Back when people of color were forced into small areas away from white people.

When women couldn't have a bank account without a husband.

Honestly, it sounds terrible. Why would you want that?

Nobody asked for that. They asked for free speech.

"Political Correctness" came into vogue in the 1980s, which today's wokesters apparently think was the stone age. I was young and foolish back then and believed it was a good idea that would make people think about what they said, and stop racism from spreading by forcing racists to stop spreading their hate.

In the last 40 years "Political Correctness" has achieved nothing. It will continue to achieve even more nothing by making more and more insane demands about what we are and are not allowed to say.

The point never was to make people be "polite". It was to make them shut up, by making them afraid of saying something - anything! - that some snowflake might construe as "offensive".

I don't want divisiveness. Which is why I don't want any more "woke" or "political correctness". I just want a return to sanity.

This meme is a farce, nobody refers to cowboys and Indians as this. Right-wing memes continuously produce strawmen.

No, you don't want sanity.

Sanity would be having respect for other people and engaging with them in a way that supports them rather than belittles them. Sanity would be listening to people when they say "don't use a slur to refer to me."

What you want is to be able to say whatever you want and have no consequences.

What I want is freedom of speech.

I don't necessarily want to practice it.

You, however, want to lecture me on what to say and not say, what to think and not think.

You are not the good guys!

What do you think "that some snowflake might construe as offensive" means if not consequence-free speech?

You don't get to say whatever you want and not suffer consequences for it.

You don't.

You're free to say whatever you want. If you say something dumb, expect consequences.

"You're free to say whatever you want."

No, not when:

"If you say something dumb, expect consequences."

Has come to mean, "If you say something that someone somewhere may misconstrue as "offensive", you may well find yourself without a job".

And since someone somewhere is guaranteed to find anything you say or do "offensive" if it can get them five seconds in the limelight, this "political correctness" madness has become a very effective way to shut up people - not out of obedience, but out of fear.

And after 40 years it still hasn't solved any problems.

Right…so practice what you preach. Take the 2x4 out of your eye before you whine about the splinter in others eyes

Never has free speech meant no consequences. It means no legal Consequences. No action by official thought police or word Nazis. Something the left now openly promotes. You want the right not to be offended. Too bad no such right has or will exist in the real world. That’s because the real world is just that, not an idealized safe space you want to impose on others based on your standards of snowflakedness. Say the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time you might get a rap on the beaner, but you are still free to say it.

Yes. We agree. Free Speech does not mean free of consequences.

But it does not mean no legal consequences.

There are many things you can say that will land you in jail.

And you can get fired from your job for the things you say.

You don't have the right to say hateful/racist/misogynist/bigoted things and expect nothing to happen.
0 ups, 2y
Actually you do have the right to say such things and if you are assaulted your assaulted can be arrested. That’s exactly what free speech means. You don’t have the right to decide what speech can be used by everyone else. Social norms or policies may determine acceptability in some situations or places such as the workplace, but your feels are not the primary decider. Free speech means you can stand on a street corner or any public space and say what you want. Period. It’s exactly why hate mongers like Nazis and BLM are allowed to gather and spout their hatred. It’s protected.

You are talking about the 1920’s-1940’s. It started to change in the 50’s and continues to this day, so much so that Black Liberal Democrats in colleges and universities are calling for…the same segregation of the 1940’s and early 1950’s on their campuses.
