Ronald Reagan: Surprise Liberal Hero

Reagan wouldn't even be accepted by today's GOP.

Sure he offered conservative mainstays like tax cuts, deregulation, military spending, misguided foreign interventions, and science denial at the margins (refusing to talk honestly about the AIDS crisis for instance).

—But Reagan’s disposition was sunny. America’s best days were ahead.
—Reagan was bipartisan. He was constantly working with Democrats to get things done.
—Reagan was a true believer in democracy. The idea of him rejecting election results or leading an insurrection is unthinkable.

Reagan would be a detested moderate outlier in the current Trumpified Republican Party. Like a Mitt Romney or a John McCain.

I think it’s time liberals started re-claiming the myth of Reagan and whacking Trumpists over the head with it at every opportunity.

While these are good things that Reagan did, it should be stated that Reagan also did a lot of bad too.
- He ignored responding to the AIDS pandemic.
- He traded weapons with Saddam Hussein and ignored crimes committed by him.
- He illegally supplied both sides of the Iran-Iraq war with weapons.
- He supported the apartheid South African Government.
- Supported dictators as long as they weren’t affiliated with Communism.
- His administration was very corrupt.
- He tripled the national debt.
- He put millions of Americans out of work.
- Caused hundreds of thousands of family farms to go bankrupt.
- By affecting the savings and loans industry, he cost taxpayers 150 billion dollars.
- Robbed the social security budget after his tax cutting for the rich shrunk the tax revenue stream for the government.
- His invasion of Grenada broke international law.
- Supported the militant Contras and with their help, may have smuggled drugs into the US.

And more.

People have forgotten how much of a raging liberal Reagan was, lol. Still an awesome president, and a voice of reason in times well past understanding in today's America. On both sides. Sad how divided we remain.

He was an awesome president, it’s a shame I wasn’t even born yet when he was in office. I wish I could’ve met him before his passing too :(
