Scenery | I HEARD A CHRISTIAN WOMAN ON THE RADIO TALKING ABOUT JOE BIDEN FORGIVING A WHOLE BUNCH OF STUDENT LOAN DEBT. SHE SAID SHE CAN'T WRAP HER HEAD AROUND HOW ONE MAN CAN FORGIVE ALL THAT DEBT. ISN'T THAT LITERALLY WHAT HER RELIGION IS BASED ON? ONE MAN FORGIVING A WHOLE BUNCH OF DEBT THAT PEOPLE WEREN'T ABLE TO PAY? | image tagged in scenery | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

No, her religion is based on hating gays.

And then they go on to say how we have to repay our debt and how god is punishing us for our failures.

I've never been shown the verse that declares that government is supposed to redistribute the fruits of one's labor.

"Give unto Caesar that which is Cesar's."

Another false analogy.

The forgiveness of sin is not the same as the canceling of a monetary debt you voluntarily agreed to.

Good point, because I never agreed to follow the rules of the God of the Bible in the first place

That has always been your choice and nobody but you will be harmed by that choice.

However, if you chose to enter into a voluntary financial loan agreement, then you have the obligation to pay back the loan according to the terms you agreed to. Why should someone else be required to pay for your choice?

no, it's not a false analogy at all.

The woman in this meme CAN comprehend forgiveness of sin- something so great as to send someone to eternal damnation but CANNOT comprehend forgiveness of something so much smaller than sin.

Student debt will not result in a 1 way ticket to Hell. Or even prison. Just crushing monthly payments that never end.

Which, frankly, it a lot like Hell.

And to the specifics of the word debt. The church I grew up in? When we recited the Lord's Prayer, we used the word debt.

Our Father, in heaven,
hallowed by thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

See that word there? debt. As in a thing that is owed.

Even without that, the premise of Christianity is that faith in Jesus and following his commandments, will get you out of Hell. Because he forgave your sins. You no longer have to pay the price of eternal damnation.

"And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."

Not used by Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, and Methodists only by Presbyterians.

I was taught "And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us;"

As Jesus said, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” Mark 12:17. So Jesus tells us to pay back our loans.

Sure. but again, it's about the woman.

She can't comprehend forgiving this great big thing.

YET claims she is a follower of Christ, a central tenant of Christianity is forgiveness of great big things.

I also don't think this is a one-off with the woman. This is common in conservatives. They want others to be punished but they want forgiveness/medical care/whatever for themselves. You see this in complaints about "why don't we have white history month!" or "small government!" when they want no regulations on them but all sorts of regulations on people they don't like.

Did you ever stop to think that she was referring to the fact that as the President he by himself can't do that without Congress' approval?

No. Because that's outside the context of the meme. You're adding things.

And, yes, a President can do that. Here's Forbes explaining the 3 possible ways: https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackfriedman/2022/03/25/3-ways-biden-could-cancel-student-loans/?sh=1aaac074e965

He may be able to pause the repayment, but Congres controls the purse strings. He can not unilaterally cancel $1.4T in debt without Congress. That would be an abuse of power.

Actually in Mark 12:17 Jesus is telling us to pay taxes.
