The sheer irony of a country like North Korea

It IS a Republic. He's a dictator, not a king.

America is a Constitutional Republic

And a democracy. There's no king, and people vote.

Republic is a what, democracy is a how. We're both.

Republic - Rule of Law.

Democracy = people vote
Republic = there's no king

Republic = Representatives of the people vote

There are quite a few countries with a monarch as nominal head (with limited, if any, power) yet function as republics

Democracy = The body of people vote individually
Republic = Representatives of the people vote on their behalf

North Korea is neither despite having it in the name
