The Native American way of life was egalitarian and held the environment and nature to a high regard. That is what they sought to protect. The South wanted to protect the profits of plantation owners through maintaining the horrific institution of slavery.

The Civil War was so horrible there were no heroes. Sheridan and Sherman would have been considered war criminals at any other time, and it was only the Union changing their Articles of War to allow the targetting of civilians that prevented these two from being considered criminals. As bad as Lee may have been, he was the closest thing to decent on both sides. I have no problem with removing statues, but the whole thing is so lopsidedly biased it undermines what they're supposedly trying to achieve.

Proud? Not really the position I'd take. I didn't do it, so I am neither proud nor ashamed. The Roman Empire wasn't built through cooperation, either. Native Americans should be treated better though, in my opinion.
