Actually that's exactly why he was arrested. For executing several Europeans because of their treatment of natives.

Francisco de Bobadilla was the arresting official and was in charge of the investigation. He did mention the hanging of five Spaniards in his report but he heavily cited numerous other charges including bribery, enslavement of natives, brutality, and abuse of office.

It is pure nonsense that you would focus on such a minor part of the arrest report. The Spanish were having none of it. Even by their standards, Christopher Columbus' conduct was shocking.

In May 1498, Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic for the third time. He visited Trinidad and the South American mainland before returning to the ill-fated Hispaniola settlement, where the colonists had staged a bloody revolt against the Columbus brothers’ mismanagement and brutality. Conditions were so bad that Spanish authorities had to send a new governor to take over. Meanwhile, the native Taino population, forced to search for gold and to work on plantations, was decimated (within 60 years after Columbus landed, only a few hundred of what may have been 250,000 Taino were left on their island). Christopher Columbus was arrested and returned to Spain in chains.

Arrested in chains and then vindicated and commissioned to do a forth voyage. His punishment of the offenders was justified. The Taino people were largely wiped out by disease. Slavery was the common practice of the day, especially among the indigenous people of the region. The Spanish were no saints and neither were the natives.

In 10 years 10% of the c.100,000 Tainos that lived on Hispaniola were dead thanks to Cristobal Colon & Co bringing disease, enslaving, torturing, raping, and outright killing them because it was ok since they weren't Catholics. But then they continued to do the same to converts as well.

Colon didn't discover aynthing (as a hemisphere with 2 continents full of people can attest) - he didn't even know he was lost.
