I can’t live without my pet Siberian tiger, he has helped me through some dark times, when my cousin was in the hospital, he comforted me by reminding me that if it weren’t for him he wouldn’t be there

By definition, they are, indeed, not service animals. A service animal is an animal that assists a disabled human (say, a blind person) in keeping them safe and whatnot. However, a support animal serves a somewhat similar purpose by assisting a human with emotional issues stay calm. So, you are indeed correct :)

Emotion support animals do people service by making them metaly stable, so doesn't that make them service animals.

I infer that animals cover two different sects of disability: emotional health and physical health. A service dog would support physical health, while a emotional support dog would support emotional health. Plus, as Titanic106 said, extensive training is required for an animal to become a service animal, but no training is required to become an emotional support animal.

Service animals can and do support people with emotional/psychological health concerns, including PTSD and panic attacks. They are still service animals and not ESAs. A service animal is trained to perform specific task(s) that help a person with a disability. When on duty, they are working. ESAs are different not because they do not help, but because they do not require any type of task performance: an ESA's presence is their benefit. A friend has a cat who is an ESA, and the cat's companionship and existence (e.g., the things the friend has to do in order to take care of a cat) are the benefit. Another friend has an SD that is trained to interrupt their compulsive behavior cycles and their self-harm rituals. Both deal with psychological disabilities but that does not make them the same.

Emotional support animals still have an important job, though: keeping a person calm so they don't suffer. In my opinion, all support animals, whether they are service animals or not, are helping improve quality of life for humans.

Yet there are laws supporting them even though they need exactly no certification to be considered ESA's. A landlord could advertise their property as "no pets allowed" and all a prospective renter has to do is demand that they be allowed to bring their pet to live with them in that property, so long as they call it an ESA, the landlord is required by law to allow them. It could be a completely untrained dog that could inevitably destroy the property.

I find it so annoying as a canid enthusiast because service dogs (therapy/guide/etc.) involve over 200 hours of training (K-9 service dogs involve more like 600 hours) so the idea of people trying to act like their “emotional support animal” is on the same level as a service animal is practically an insult towards actual service animals

Not to mention that usually only 1-2 puppies out of each litter meets the temperament requirements for being a service dog and still has a 10% fail rate

fun fact, if you pay ~$60 (im aussie, so it might differ) you can register your dog as emotional support, therefore landlords cannot refuse you rent.

They should at least be certified to be considered such the same way any other service animal is. It's a load of crap that a landlord who doesn't want to rent their property to someone with pets is legally required to allow them to bring their pets in so long as they call them ESA's.

there is no required certification for other service animals (which in the US are exclusively dogs and miniature horses). while an effective and appropriate SD team will have a lot of training and so often has some certs, there is no specific requirement, legal registry, etc.

I hesitate on saying this but I agree.
