Everyone DID take it seriously for the first month or so. The problem was that the flatten the curve model was never going to get us through this quickly. The idea was to slow the spread so that hospitals could keep up with the flow. (The same total number of cases spread out over a longer period so it was less at a time, but not over all). The "two weeks to flatten the curve" was a blatant lie, because the government knew most people wouldn't accept a longer stretch up front, so they started with "two weeks" and just kept on extending it. Realistically, it should have been about 6 months, to get through the worst. But once our government tasted our submission, they wanted more, so they refused to relinquish it. Power feels good, even without an end goal.
