Its not a deflection. Its pointing out that its both sides. Its the nature of all human interaction. You have conflicts and compromises. To say its just the left or just the right ignores that there are people on a spectrum on both sides. The more extreme have to compromise with the moderates, and the moderates have to give the more extreme enough incentive to vote in the first place.
Democracy is messy. Pretending we used to all be on the same page pushes the narrative that we are more divided now than ever. We have been less divided, but with the exception of war time when we focus on an external threat, we are never on the same page. Parties have split, dissolved entirely, and reformed.
