Got a link? Seriously, I'd like to know which specific program or programs you're referring to.
The only "housing" that I saw was when I was on active duty was base housing, and it cost the individual servicemember and their family a pretty penny (I don't know how or if that compares to a dime).
Veterans (who fall under the VA) aren't really eligible for "housing", except for the above mentioned base housing which involves being the lowest priority on a long waiting list and, if and when you do get a home, a hefty monthly rent. Rent is usually not as high as housing costs in the surrounding civilian communities, but still not free by any means. Even then, not all veterans are eligible for this, typically disabled vets and retirees.
There is also a "housing allowance" offered to those that are going to school on the Post 9-11 GI Bill. It is equivalent to the allowance that an E5 would get. Not a fortune, but it helped pay the bills.
Looking forward to that link. Never pass up an opportunity to school an old Marine conservative SOB.
