That depends where you live. I know people in Arizona who get most of their energy from their roof panels in the summer, and still get a lot in the winter.

That's one state, however coal is still the main used electricity type. It is terrible for the environment and so is the mining of cobalt. So when getting electricity is decent for the environment then I will talk about which type of car is better.

So, you're saying we should transition away from coal. I so agree! I also share your concern about the components of the batteries, but I'm not sure that car batteries are that much worse than the hundreds of millions of cell phone batteries we're all demanding.

The entire northwestern region (Oregon, Washington, Idaho & Montana) relies mainly on hydropower.  Here in Oregon there's a lot of wind power & even an option to get all your electricity from windmills.
