As you can see, large groups of people in states switch sides all the time politically. If they didn’t, then no state would ever shift so radically between Presidents. Republicans (during the civil war) were the party of BIG FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. They (mostly northern politicians) wanted to control what the Southern states did (ie "Slavery)

The Democrats (Specifically southern democrats) wanted to defend states rights (specifically the right to engage in slavery) and in doing so were for SMALL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

Nathan Bedford Forest would later quit the KKK as he deemed it had become too violent. It was still an organization whose member would be from the Democratic party and eventually achieve a fair amount of power and influence in the South through the 1950's.
