In reality, 300,000+ Americans and counting have died even though we took more severe social distancing precautions than ever before in our history. With no social distancing at all, it’s not that hard to believe the death toll would have reached into the millions.
Public policy and personal behavior (which are outside scientists’ control) affect public health outcomes, and it’s therefore impossible for scientists to predict the future with 100% accuracy. But it’s important that they try anyway.
YouTube, social media, the rumor mill, indeed the President of the United States: these are the true culprits behind the erosion of public trust in science and medicine in America.
