Actually, it is.
Words of themselves are harmless, it is the motivation and intent behind them that can be socially unacceptable.
Censoring a word or any speech for that matter, in general, does nothing to further the social discourse around a subject. The only speech that should be restricted is a direct call for violence or a direct threat to harm someone, and even this is a slippery slope.
As far as Orwell being a socialist, in the early 20th century, no country had tried socialism on any scale and we did not have the evidence of the dangers of socialism that we have today. Many people back then thought socialism sounded good, as do many misinformed people today.
Australia had the first socialist government in 1899 but dropped it a week later. The first real socialistic country was the Soviet Union and we have seen the dangers and the cost in human life of that failed experiment.
The only remanding socialist governments are all dictatorships.
