A bunch of dead old guys didn't know that every civilian would have access to weapons that could fire 15 times faster than they could (According to the manual from the Bushmaster AR-15 which states a rate of fire at 45RPM. I haven't bought that brand, I don't know how it could be that slow. Flintlock Muskets could fire 3 rounds per minute at best. Each revolutionary also only carried one tin that held 30 rounds of ammunition, a musket tool, and a supply of flints.
So let's think about this logically for a minute and get back to this revolutionary vs AR-15 issue. Do you think people of that era would want risk those weapons falling into the hands of criminals?
So, let's just say that if each solder can carry (3) items to make their gun work for a duel, how much more ammo do you think the guy with the AR 15 is carrying? Our revolutionary soldier can only carry 30.... Which will take him ten minutes to exhaust if he never stops firing.
Each AR-15 standard magazine holds 3 clips that carry ten rounds each - 30 bullets. So, he already has one loaded into his rifle, let's count that magazine to one of his items to make the gun function. If he has room for 3 items, he has ninety rounds. He'd be all over with his rounds right at the same time our Musketeer was firing his fifteenth shot.
If I could go back in time to present my case to G.W. This is exactly what I would say:
"So, Mr. Washington, In the interests of the right to bear arms against all enemies foreign and domestic, should we also let criminals have the same access to these weapons, making it easier to come by? Or should we make them illegal, driving the costs to acquire one up more and more with increased demand - thereby making the weapons difficult to get with also little training? These people will walk around our schools, our hospitals, our churches, our constitutional proceedings. By the way, Mr. Washington, when the technology for these firearms are made available to the public, we will have weapons of war that will make these weapons count for naught when we have planes that cost $120 million dollars that these weapons can't even touch, but will completely level a building, or city?"
