Francis P. Blair, one of the Republican Party’s founders, owned slaves while he presided over the 1856 Republican convention and was a delegate in 1860.

Benjamin Burton, who served twice as a state legislator in Delaware under the Whig party before becoming a Republican later in life, also owned slaves, according to his obituary. In fact, his 28 slaves made him Delaware’s leading slave-owner.

Historians have identified eight more prominent Republicans who also owned slaves in 1860.

During the Civil War, the Border (slave) States that remained with the Union were allowed to keep slavery going, and were EXEMPT from the Emancipation Proclamation, as were three Confederate States the Union occupied at least part of.

Vagabond, you know I respect you - but what the deuce does that have to do with anything talking about on this page?

The Civil War was not mentioned in the OP meme?
You weren't pointing out how Republicans were a tad willing to look the other way in when it came to slavery when it convenienced them?

What I said also doesn't jibe well with the silly and deliberately bogus "Thuh Civil War wuz fought by whites/Republicans against the Democratz whoo still want thuh Blackz on thu plantashun"

...I... guess as a corollary to the discussion that a much more skilled OP could have pivoted to, sure.

But even then, we weren't really contesting that the Republicans were the abolitionist party - they obviously were, and if the history of the United States had ended in 1963 that might even still mean something today. And yeah, during the war, there were nuances and political compromises on the way, including, famously, as you say, that Lincoln himself didn't go all in on abolitionism until the risk of losing border States was less than the risk of Europe intervening on the side of Confederates because apparently all these diplomats keep telling us it's not about slavery so we're cool to take the side of the raw-materials exporters, yeah?

But the angle this guy really went for was unusual - it was to claim some kind of Original Sin purity level of the party at its roots, and he intentionally stops his claim just before the war starts. So Lincoln and the War themselves didn't seem to me to be within the scope of the argument.

I have a feeling that this ties in to the currently popular myth of whatever they think "cancel culture" is supposed to be, because I think they want to see if they can claim an immunity to Original Sin reasoning for their Republican brand. Obviously they can't, but I think that's what this was, rather than the more run of the mill revisionism of the Civil War's moral basis that we're more used to dealing with.

Shucks, that's what I get for not reading the ground rules on the sign in sheet which I did not rub my John HandinCock on. Didn't mean to derail this lovely talk about Rotten Tomatoes ratings by going beyond the agreed upon parameters. Muh bad,,,

Dafrig do I care about debate, discussion, argument, spin the tale of the wonky, and whatever silly thumb wrestling going on here between the way fab partisan hack duo dolts?
I stated a simple fact, that's all. If everyone did that, this excess nonsense would be voided, but it's far cuter to argue that the Democrats have changed soooooo much since they were the Confederacy and started the KKK than to simply say that the Confederacy didn't have political parties PERIOD.

Hell, that Indian whomever subject of the OP meme that everyone treats like he's, um, what is he again? - his PARENTS were born the property of their British Emperor. They came here because after 8000 years, they couldn't make it in that backward cesspool of a First FIRST World turned Third World country that has more barefooted poor people than we have people in the entire USofA.
Thafuq do I care what he has to say when he's one generation away from being a street beggar and now runs a call center that cons old folks out of their homes and earnings?

Hope I didn't ruin this grand world changing chat too much with that dollop of reality.

Exactly! 150 years and people are still giving whites, who did not live in that time, crap about slavery!

I'm not ignoring anything. It's called dealing with one problem at a time.

The world will not end if you say "It appears that I made a mistake!"

Your life does not collapse if you just say "I didn't know that! I learned something new and I should make my opinions stronger for it."

The world will not end if you realize you believed the wrong person on the wrong thing on this occasion. It happens. It is not a calamity. It's part of being human.

But it's people like you who insist on weaseling their way out of every responsibility for being wrong who are the problem. People who just don't care that they were wrong. That's when the world stops learning. That's when we're all held back waiting for you to own up to your mistake.

I never said I did not make a mistake did I now. I'm a Christian, I'm very aware nobody is perfect but God, that is why I take to consideration what others say.

Because that would be cruel and unusual punishment for anyone in jail having to get stuck near her.

He goes a long way back - I'm showing my age a little bit by saying I remember when all he did was TV commercials.

Armageddon and The Rock were interesting movies at the time if only because his clichés weren't yet clichéd, but it does have to be said - a large part of his success came from an audience of teenagers with terrible taste.

Just about everyone agrees that Pearl Harbor, The Island, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes all stank to high heaven.

I'm sorry to hear that. I know that us old-timer millennials are prone to saying stuff like this, but I honestly believe that cinema peaked about twelve years ago and has been in decline for ten years.

I could probably agree with that.

The number one lowest rated movie is the Taliban made "You've Got Mail-Bomb"'.

They are very similar, only difference is who you report too and neither is democratic. Both want to tell you what to do and when to do and it’s not based on what’s best for the state.

There are MANY more differences that you're not mentioning, and the one that ALWAYS gets left out is that fascism is an ultranationalist thing, right in its core.

Socialism by its very nature rejects even very mild forms of nationalism. Remember? Lefties are globalists? The left want open borders, remember that shit?

MAJOR difference, but it's a difference that doesn't suit you so you leave it out and hope that the other side doesn't know about it.

Obviously I wasn’t presenting a dissertation on all the differences. As far as hiding anything, all you have to do is ask your phone or type it into google and you will be presented specific points of difference. So your conspiracy theory is “debunked”.

My statement stands as they both lead to a loss of individual freedoms and rights. Eventually socialism/communism leads to totalitarian rule and Facism leads to rule by dictatorship. Neither is conducive to self determination or freedom of thought or speech. The United States has defeated both in the recent past and we will defeat you and your commie buddies this time too.

Ok I’ll flesh it out for you. Ultimately, the only difference in how it affects the average person is who you report to. Yes there are many differences in the dogma, both lead to mental and physical slavery.

Guess which dictator gutted labor unions, privatized the economy, was ultra-nationalistic, anti-semitic, and forced communists into concentration camps? Take a wild guess.
1 up, 4y
Guess which Socialist Supreme leader did the same? Go ahead guess. There may be a few correct answers here.
1 up, 4y
Last statement should be, “not based on what’s best for you but what’s best for the state.”
