I know many elderly repubs exist.. but I wonder how many of them agree with the anti-mask sentiment.

Explain how it isn't. You're doing something you would not normally do, simply because you were told to it.

All signs of submission to authority.
0 ups, 5y
If you managed to “live” in a society where nobody submitted to authority, you wouldn’t like it. In fact you’d probably be screaming at the government for not forcing their authority on people.

I don’t think wearing a face mask in public is any more “submissive” than wearing a seatbelt in a vehicle. They’re both for protection.
2 ups, 5y,
2 replies
You are correct, they both show submission to authority and both provide debatable protection.

There are debates that wearing a mask provides very little protection. As is with seatbelts, there are those who argue that in some situations, wearing a seatbelt is more dangerous than not wearing it.

In either case, it should be my decision and not something the government should be trying to force me to do. The government's job is to protect my rights. It is my job to protect myself and my family.

'You are correct, they both show submission to authority and both provide debatable protection.'

WOW.
0 ups, 5y
IN 90% of head-on collisions and roll-overs, seatbelts save lives. However, there are multiple instances when a seatbelt has cost the life of the wearer. Nothing is 100% guaranteed, and in the end, the choice is still up to the individual.

Being submissive isn’t always bad. Do you think it’s wrong for kids to be submissive to their parents when they restrict what kids wear or how they act? It’s to protect them and others from harm.
1 up, 5y,
1 reply
Good point, but I think comparing children to adults is not the same. Children, by law, are not considered mature enough to make these decisions. Adults have rights that allow them to make medical decisions for themselves.
0 ups, 5y
Yes, it’s too bad all adults don’t take responsibility for their own actions. But we’ve become a society where it’s always someone else’s fault and lawsuits run rampant.

Yes, they’re our “nanny”. Too many people expect the government to take care of them because they don’t have the self discipline to take responsibility for themselves.

Face masks don't protect you, they protect other people from you.

e.g. Surgeons wear masks to protect the patient (from the doctor), not the doctor (from the patient).
2 ups, 5y,

Amen.
And seatbelts protect you and others because they keep you from becoming a human projectile.

a seat belt protects the person wearing it, a mask does not
1 up, 5y
Seatbelts also protect others. I know someone who was in an accident, she was sitting behind the driver and not wearing a seatbelt.

They went round a bend and were hit by a drunk driver on the wrong side of the road. The force of her hitting the driver's seat destroyed her jaw and broke both of the driver's legs, they didn't think he'd walk again.

Unless it’s an unvented N95 mask.
But the whole point of wearing a mask in public is to protect others from you, especially in situations where you can’t be far apart.

You say surgeons wear masks because innards are usually exposed and that’s not normal.
We are asked to wear masks right now because we’re in a situation that also isn’t normal — a viral pandemic.

its not like they are asking you to run up and down a mountain just put something over mouth so it can prevent spreading of the air particles from your mouth if you have something.
2 ups, 5y,

You mean how it traps microbes and then let's them breed and spread as you move and they fly off the mask? How about the fact that most masks have holes in them the size of skyscrapers that covid-19 can drive trains through (metaphorically speaking)?
Not only that. They aren't asking. They are telling us they are going to fine or jail us if we don't do it.

That's just common courtesy, but is it 'necessary'? No. The worst that could happen is someone gets a mild cold from it. See the only people that are at risk of dying are the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

0 ups, 5y,

Yep, if everyone protects their own interests without breaking the law or hurting others society will get better. If they want to put some kind of emergency power in, they need to amend the constitution to do it. If they don't, they are breaking the law and committing sedition which is a punishable criminal offense.
0 ups, 5y
I believe the constitution already has provisions for emergency power.

You really don’t get or, do you.
Below you said pandemics are normal and they happen every 100 years or so. But somehow, surgery is not as normal as a pandemic (even though they happen every day). Then you say surgeons ware masks to protect the pertinent but we don’t need to wear masks to protect each other.

Your logic is all over the place and you’re grasping at straws trying to rationalize your fear of tyranny because, in your opinion, wearing masks are not necessary during this perfectly normal pandemic.

“Surgeons wear masks to protect THE PATIENT and their exposed innards. Exposed innards is not normal.”
“Pandemics are, in fact, QUITE normal. They've happened throughout history. The last time was a mere 100 years ago”

Let me spell it out for ya, since you can’t seem to comprehend your own comments.
Surgery happens hundreds of times every day all year long. Surgeons wear masks during them. Pandemic happen once every 100 years or so. People wear masks during them.

It’s no wonder you can’t comprehend my analogy. You can’t even comprehend yourself.

Masks do in fact reduce the threat of spreading viruses. Viruses travel from your mouth and nose in droplets. These droplets are large enough for even a cloth mask to block. Your fear of tyranny doesn’t change this fact, no matter how matter-of-factory your keep repeating it. Facts and science are against you and your fear that the government wants you to wear a mask as a sign of conformity or oppression
0 ups, 5y
“If YOU wear a mask...by your own argument...you won't get sick“

You still don’t get it do you. Just like a surgeon wears a mask to protect the patient. YOU should wear a mask to protect others. People don’t wear their masks over their eyes, and eyes are where viruses can enter the body.

Also, YOU might be a carrier and not know it. Haven’t you heard of asymptomatic carriers? Your argument of tyranny is ridiculous. “Big Brother” isn’t trying to see how much they can force you to do for their own enjoyment. Take off the tinfoil hat and become a responsible member of society.

You're right, I will continue not wearing a mask for a few reasons.

1) Where I live it makes absolutely no sense to wear one.

2) The common surgical or homemade mask does very little-to-nothing to prevent viruses from spreading.

3) I will not be told by the government what I can and cannot wear or how I should act. They have no authority over me when it comes to how I should act during a virus outbreak.

And most of all, I will not be intimidated by local thug citizens who feel like they're above me just because they wear a mask and don't like the fact I don't and decide to tattle.

And since I live in a state (or at least a county) that does not require me to wear one, I won't.
