In order to form a more perfect union. No inference that it is perfect, but that it is a foundation to do just that. And over the years that's what we've done. The USA was just a loose confederation of states until the Constitution was debated and ratified, it was in real danger of disintegration. SO there were a number of compromises- the South wanted a balanced budget provision, the North wanted to end slavery (the 3/5ths compromise was not what too many people are saying it was. Read what escaped slave Frederick Douglas had to say about it later in his life- in a nutshell he said it inclined the nation toward freedom by depriving the South of claiming slaves as citizens for additional representation in the House. By not counting the as full citizens the anti-slave North always had a legislative advantage. There is so much more, and it's not hard to understand with a little effort. It has built in provisions for orderly change, so if we must change we need to do that way. The electoral college is in itself brilliant. It's like an averaging of the popular vote by state.
