Trump gets to decide who gets aid. Not some shitbag ambassador. No one is owed it. They got their aid and NO investigation or public statement was made.

Yes, presidential administrations can withhold or threaten to withhold foreign aid for a legitimate purpose. The way Biden did as VP: to force the Ukrainians to take corruption more seriously.

What they *can't* do is try to withhold aid to try to pressure a foreign country to dedicate judicial resources to investigating a political adversary's son. The way Trump did. That's seeking a tangible personal benefit, and it is an abuse of office.

Think someone did something wrong and want to open an investigation? Put the FBI on it, and they can make that determination. Don't get foreign counterparts to do it for you, which they probably will, because they're in a low-level war with Russia and dependent on your aid for their national survival.

"Nothing happened" in the end because the details of this scheme were leaked and the public pressure was too immense, so Trump had no choice but to release the aid. If it hadn't leaked? Who knows what would have happened.
