I guess I would define “Real politics” as issues like healthcare, taxes, and foreign policy
And “Identity politics” as empty flattering of certain groups or demonizing of other groups
And by my definition, Trump’s style is all about identity politics and very light on substance.
There can be some overlap between those categories, but I think when Trump loudly rails (for example) against refugees and immigrants and vows to “build that wall”... I file that under the heading of “white identity politics.” It’s fundamentally a primal scream of rage against people who are different from white native-born Americans and therefore scary, and should not be mistaken for coherent statements of actual policy. Although it of course gets translated into that in some way by virtue of him being president.
This is what motivates Trump voters. Not the standard GOP platform, which all the other 2016 GOP primary candidates offered, and which were roundly rejected by the voters one by one.
