Both Democrats and Republicans should never want their party to have the presidency for too long. The pendulum needs to swing and it needs to be changed up so the corruption rot doesn't set.

I actual think my political orientation rather than Democrat may simply be "curmudgeon." I have not really been a fan of any single president in my lifetime. Bill Clinton was a schmoozing self-regarding and unfaithful lout. I thought Obama got it backwards by prioritizing healthcare when the economy was still in shambles, and Obamacare was a mess that contrary to its namesake ("Affordable Care Act") didn't halt the ever-rising cost of health care at all.

I despised G.W.B. for sending thousands to their graves in an unnecessary war based on false premises.

And now I hate Trump for running roughshod over our Constitution and inspiring legions of followers to believe that insult is the highest form of discourse

This all depends on what you mean by "Better" If what you mean to say is that Republicans need to be more liberal - that very mentality is what brought us Donald Trump.

The election of Donald Trump was as much a rejection of establishment Republicans who sold out their values by moving to the left as it was a rejection of Democrats who are outright Marxists. Think about it. All the current living presidents disapprove of Donald Trump - Republicans and Democrats alike.

Most Republicans today and what they support would easily have fit into the Democrat party platform 20 + years ago - and most Democrats today are so far to the left that most have no problem whatsoever with Marxist ideals. The entire, current, political platform of Democrats is built on mostly Marxist principles. However, ironically they don't see it that way because they're out of touch with reality.

This is precisely why Obama has been warning Democrats to not go too far to the left or Donald Trump is sure to win again. He said " We need to be rooted in reality " What are the implications of that statement? That many of these candidates are out of touch with reality and it's not just GOP voters who see this.

Think about it. Every candidate in the Democrat party who has moved towards being a moderate usually ranked higher in the polls than the more radical ones moving to the left.

I would actually be mostly okay with Trump right now, except for the following:

1. Election interference in Ukraine
2. Insulting, grating, and narcissistic persona
3. Denies science on climate change

I consider items 1 & 2 to be merely self-inflicted wounds peculiar to Trump that have nothing to do with ideology necessarily. Only item 3 is a truly "liberal" plank. I oppose other aspects of Trump's agenda, but I understand that he won the election and therefore gets to pursue them.

But: failing to act on climate now is going to cost us greatly in the long run. If the Republicans evolved on this one issue I would be far more inclined to support them.
