In political science, a reactionary can be defined as a person or entity holding political views that favour a return to a previous political state of society that they believe possessed characteristics that are negatively absent from the contemporary status quo of a society. As an adjective, the word reactionary describes points of view and policies meant to restore a past status quo.

"Oh no my Party is no longer in power we Need to Change that back."
With the american 2 Party System you can not be anything but reactionary.

No. No, that's not it. You can't do that. That's not valid.

So you're saying everyone has someone they want to be in charge, so everyone's authoritarian. Everyone has a goal they want to make progress towards, so everyone's progressive. Everyone has something they want to go back to, so everyone's reactionary.

Absolute nonsense. These words have precise meanings and you don't know what they are.

Authoritarianism promotes policies that actively endorse the platform that a person being in charge and having absolute power is a good thing - that people are better off with authority in the hands of the state entirely.

Progressivism promotes policies that actively endorse the platform that people are better off with a future that has not yet been tried, things like the labor movement, things like sexual liberation, and so on. i.e. it doesn't matter when the Democrats were last in charge, the transgender community has never felt secure in their rights, so theirs is a progressive platform.

Reactionaryism promotes policies that actively endorse the platform that, as you say, old traditional values are best for shaping government and policy, and this liberal progressive hippy changey stuff is destroying us.

That is what these words mean and you do not seem to understand that.

Infanticide based on gender - which is almost exactly a 50-50 coin toss - has absolutely been done before in many societies.

We're talking about advances in science, technology, and social organization. Reforms. Innovations. Things that were never possible. The idea of a legally enforced minimum wage would never have worked until about the 19th Century.
0 ups, 5y,

Killing based on gender is the same a a real coinflip? XD

Okay have it your way.

a Minimum wage across the board has not been tried

A fix wage and fix Price for products so no one could extort the People had been tried. Look into the Guild System of medival Germany.

Very Reactionary of you to go back that far. Do we want to go even further back to try to dig out anarchy from the beginning of humanity before the Concept of law was even a Thing?

It’s not left vs. right anymore. It’s those who recognize the danger of global warming, vs. everyone else.

It’s an exaggeration to say all other issues are a distraction, but it’s getting to that point.

Previous climatic shifts have happened over tens of thousands of years. This one is happening over decades. That’s not a lot of time for life forms to adapt.

Life on earth has survived radical shocks like asteroid impacts before, but.... things changed dramatically.

If climate change continues at this rate, many more species will go extinct and lots of people will die.

That article is a hoax. A single massive volcanoe erupting, or a meteor landing can do more climate change in one day than all humanity in thousands of years. The fact that we are still alive is a miracle. Yet you believe in those hoax rather than miracles.

once again, natural selection shall first sort out all of it, and humans will be perfectly fine.
it might actually do good, because that will open up antarctica if what all the radicals that are screaming are correct.

imgflip.com/gif/3hvxid Couple things here. 1. Scientific theories improve and evolve with additional data. The fact that some science in the past was wrong says nothing about the state of science today. Nobody attacks the entire medical profession because doctors several decades ago didn’t know and couldn’t do the same sorts of procedures they routinely do today.

2. If you think climate researchers and Democrats have an interest in promoting global warming dialogue... the fossil fuel companies and the GOP have an equal and opposite interest in promoting disinformation about it. Everyone has an agenda. The difference is the science actually backs the Democratic agenda in this case.

Off-topic but I’ll engage a little bit. That question you posed is a lot more complicated than you think. You could strain for scientific answers but there’s a large social dimension to the concept of gender that can’t be ignored.

Science tells us the sun will get bright enough to evaporate the earth’s oceans in a matter of a billion years or so. At that point, all life will die. Obviously we are powerless to stop that.

This is not that.

You still haven't responded to his point about volcanic eruptions or meteor impacts.. hurt your argument too much?
3 ups, 5y
I did, when I said below that something is eventually going to bring humanity to an end one day (meteor strike, atomic war, the inevitable death of the sun, etc.)

Man-made climate change is a completely different, and avoidable, process. We should be doing what we can to prevent it, in the hopeful event that one of the above doesn’t kill us all off first.

We are humans, we are smart, and we can walk and chew gum at the same time.
4 ups, 5y
His point wasn't that a volcanic eruption or meteor impact was going to wipe us out - it is that they in ONE instance end up releasing more CO2 than humanity has in a thousand years. THAT point you still have yet to address
3 ups, 5y,

You triggered yet? Nahmy nihilism is to prove that you dont know what you are talking about. All working together is wishy washy feelings, people are different and have different opinions and believed, it will never happen, best hope for a unicorn or a dragon. It is never gonna happen specially if you do not bring measurable facts. You still could not argue with me about the fact that there are other factors that contribute to climate change.
4 ups, 5y
There are so many examples in even recent history of societies coming together to tackle big problems, and succeeding... WWII, Space Race, etc. Climate change is the analogous problem of our times. Your nihilism still does not make sense to me. I hope you one day grow up to find some value in society and the continuation of a thriving human race on a habitable planet.
3 ups, 5y,

Everyone is going to die at some point. Why people are so afraid of death is beyond me. I dont care which timelines you see, because you only see articles that fit your agenda. I know what I speak about, a single massive volcanoe erupting, meteor, and other forces that Earth has already experienced will result in more climate change in one day than humans in a thousand years. Can you argue that? No, I really dont think so. And any if that could happen today or tomorrow without warning. Be happy for what you have today because it is not promised tomorrow. Stop spreading fear to feed your ego and agenda. Embrace death, it is natural. Death comes to us all, nothing last forever, trying to prevent it is futile.
3 ups, 5y
I understand that we’re all going to die. Whether the sun roasts us in a billion years, an asteroid hits us, or more likely, a dumb and impulsive decision by humanity kills us all. That’s not the point. We can all still work to make life better when we’re here with the time and the talents that we are given.

If it’s all pointless and we’re all going to die, then why even work toward improving things like modern medicine and agriculture? I’m pretty sure you’d agree those things are valuable.

I don’t understand your nihilism. Seems you primarily derive life enjoyment out of triggering the libs. Okay, but most of us have greater aspirations.

Yes darling, but it starts affecting the planet a lot sooner than that. 4 billion years for the planet to be totally roasted, less than 100 thousand years for most life on earth to be completely gone, and a lot less till we start experiencing its toll. So yes is that, as well as the moon moving away. Hoax. BTW the ozone layer is rebuilding back up and expected to be fully rebuilt by 2065. So, we are not doing that bad. But go bitch at China, leave US alone ignorant freaks.
4 ups, 5y
Those aren’t the timelines I’ve seen. No one I know of is predicting all life on earth to die in as little as a hundred thousand years by natural processes.

Now, if humanity itself continues to massively f**k up the earth... maybe.

How to stop global warming is simple: Stop breathing. Every time you breathe out, you are adding CO2 to the atmosphere. If you guys care about the environment so much, you shouldn’t drive a car and fly a plane, because that makes you a hypocrite. Stop telling people to not fly on planes because they hurt the environment. It’s the same with cars. If there was a real crisis, you guys would be “woke” and walk to work everyday, or bike. Stop telling people to pollute the environment and then you go ahead on a nonstop flight halfway across the world for a climate change rally to stop burning fossil fuels.

What about Co2? If it wasn't for it we would probably be frozen. But hey, Earth has something denser than Co2 that will really mess up things when the sun gets a about 10~15% brighter which will make this planet a lot worse than Venus. That is called H2O, is denser than Co2 and will really wreck this planet. Educate yourself.

You forgot to explain how socialism in the west will solve these issues, when biggest polluters in the world are socialist/communist countries who the 16yo girl nor her globalist friends target?

These signs climate protesters carry are everywhere: "System Change, NOT Climate Change".

It's not about the climate, never was. One world government that's what is about. Climate is a convenient tool to use as an excuse to bring in worldwide control system. That is why they're not spreading this BS in China, India, Middle East. Those people already have no rights to speak up. West is the 'problem' (US,UK/EU,CA,AU,NZ).

With EU failing, US electing Trump, liberal ideas failing and populist movements growing, globalists need to switch to plan B. Socialism in the name of climate! Talk about a distraction.

Are you aware that 6 out of 9 planets in our solar system are warming up? Humans fault? Perhaps evil capitalism is to blame for warming of Uranus? You think maybe the sun has something to do with this? Fact is all planets are alive, evolving and constantly changing, like you and I. Earth is alive and always changing. Point me to a time in earths 4.5B year history when the climate wasn't changing and I'll give you a cookie!

Keep this in mind. Humans are responsible for ~3% of ALL CO2 in the atmosphere (All western countries listed above are responsible for ~1% of that). The CO2 makes up 0.04% of gases in the atmosphere.

Panning of plastic straws was a gauge to see if people are stupid enough for the next step.

Lot of things here to respond to. I’ve already argued till I’m blue in the face against others upthread so imma keep this brief.

One thing I’ll say is I don’t care about socialism per se. I don’t know what those other people’s motivations are. But if they’re the only ones who will join me in the climate battle, so be it. Bottom line, I’d rather be alive on a socialist planet than dead under a free-for-all.

But I think we can accomplish a whole lot with a simple Economy-wise carbon tax. That wouldn’t be socialism really, just another tax overlay on top of our current taxation system. It is in fact a market-driven solution favored by conservative and moderate economists who accept the science of climate change and the urgency to act. Consumers and businesses will be able to decide how much they want to pollute and how much carbon tax they are willing to pay.

Yes, climate always changes. It’s the pace of the changes this time that is so dangerous. We right now are seeing changes over decades that in previous eras would have occurred over tens of thousands of years. That is not a lot of time for life forms to adapt.

I’m not sure what you mean by other planets are “living.” Sure, their “climates” evolve too over periods of tens of thousands of years. But none of that matters because their climates are not inhabitable by humans, and never will be. This world right here is all we have and will ever have. And we’re taking it for granted and treating it recklessly.

I guess I didn’t keep it brief after all, but this is truly an existential issue and therefore one of the only ones that I will go on at this length about.
4 ups, 5y
People die due. Get over it. Che Guevara murdered a shit ton of innocent people and you probably wear his shirt.
2 ups, 5y,

The idea that taxation will solve this problem is futile. What has the carbon tax done so far other than raise costs? People/corporation will pay the tax and go about their business.

This is all setting up to be a massive power grab for one world government of unelected bureaucrats that will not only tax you, but control ALL world economy. No more free markets. All based on a lie/misinformation.

Scientists and data that is contrary to what is being shoved down our throats gets suppressed and lose funding. For example, the medieval warm period that UN denies when temperatures globally were warmer than today. We didn't have factories, SUVs or power stations back then.

Have you asked yourself why would corporation and banks continue to invest heavily in costal regions, if they're all about 'risk'?

I don't believe human activity is responsible for "global warming/climate change" as much as the UN climate panel would wish for us to imagine. As mentioned above, human activity is responsible for ~3% of CO2 in the atmosphere. What will they do about volcanos and other natural ways that introduce CO2 into the atmosphere?

Lets not worry about it. There will be no debates, just ideas to conform to or else.
Only last year, they told us we have 12 years left to change our ways. This week I've read that we have 'already reached climate change tipping points' and that we are heading for catastrophic domino effect. Someone can't wait!

Yes, this planet, like all the others, is a living conscious being.

It really is hard to keep this brief...

The "danger of global warming" is unavoidable, since it's a natural part of the planet's life cycle, and has been for billions of years. Trying to /stop/ global warming would likely be far more harmful to the planet.
1 up, 5y,
1 reply
Without writing another essay again... the problem is not that changes are occurring. I agree with you they always have. The problem is the pace of the changes we are seeing now. The climate is changing in a matter of decades when such changes used to take place naturally over thousands of years.

“Decades“ seems slow in terms of a human lifetime, but in geologic terms it is the blink of an eye and not a lot of time at all for life forms to evolve and adapt.

Yes, life on earth has survived worse shocks like meteor impacts but they changed the character of life on earth forever. If we can avoid it, we should.
1 up, 5y
That's the real argument. Those on the right don't deny climate change exists, despite what leftists say about them "denying science". What's up for dispute is whether or not humans are actually having any significant impact on the rate.

Humans put out a small fraction of the CO2 that the Earth herself puts out on an annual basis, and despite all narratives, science so far /can't/ fully settle on whether, or how much, that's affecting the climate.
