the kurds (pfg) were essential in taking on ISIS.
and they were promised certain carrots for their assistance:
https://thekurdishproject.org/history-and-culture/kurdish-democracy/rojava-democracy/
they were not only pivotal is securing the region, but they also held thousands of ISIS fighters in prison.
now the turks, who are pretty f**king fascist, but since they have the 2bd largest army in the UN security forces.we look the other way, ignoring their multiple human rights violations.we need turkey, and turkey has had a long LONG standing grudge with the kurds (mainly the PKK).
turkey has been salivating to invade northern Syria, and with the minute that trump announced his unilateral decision to withdraw...they jumped the border and started bombing.(this is happening RIGHT NOW).
hundreds of innocent kurds, fleeing for their lives..are dead.
the PFG kurds are being forced to not only defend themselves against turkey, but also can no longer guard the estimated 10's thousands of ISIS fighters.and will most likely be forced to go to assad, hat in hand,to ask for the SDF's assistance in fighting off the turks.
which means, ostensibly, aligning with Russia and iran (and possibly china).
all because trump decided, unilaterally mind you,to simply ignore our promises and withdraw from the region.
we have a long history of dicking over the kurds (among many others) all due to political expediency.
so this isn't the over-simplified,partisan drivel we are all being subjected to.
this is not an either/or equation.
pulling out of Syria was a trump campaign promise, and I am fine with that.
but you do not do so in a way that leaves a trusted.and successful partnership to the designs of a fascist nation seeking to exterminate them from the planet.
this bumbling and buffoonish decision by trump is just one in a long line of horrible, catastrophic and devastating foreign policy decisions that have destabilized the region.stripped us of credibility and influence .
and we get nothing.absolutely nothing out this whole ordeal.
