[image deleted]I'm an atheist but I'd sure as hell take 'god' over pretty much any of the idiotic bullshit modern generations replaced it with..

Feminism, liberalism, socialism, Marxism, social justice, religious about celebrities, religious behaviour about TV show franchises, whose got the best games console... I'd say in retrospect that religion was the least childish form of religion we had..

Look at the 50's and look at now. I don't care if you hate religion, it kept things in check. Was it too harsh, perhaps, but look what happens when it dissolves. Our culture is atheist.

The media, Hollywood, music, the education system. These aren't all atheist? Really? Mel had to finance the Passion himself because Pedowood wouldn't greenlight a positive movie about Jesus, anymore.

Don't blame racism on Christianity. Not in the 50's. I'll have you know when Christianity was a larger focus of the black population, they had a single mother rate right off whites, or low. Now it's at 75%. Do you really think religion didn't play a role in low teenage birth rates and a strong work ethic? And there are alot of different denominations that thought differently. The Quakers use to help slaves.

I never said order. I said degeneracy. Do you know there is a state funded show in Denmark, I think, that pays young adults to take drugs and film it, for the 'education' of it's country's youth?

But it is secular, as well as given to ever rampant consumerism and materialism, self indulgent to the point that the craving for hedonist extremes is practically outpacing the limits of imaginable depravity.

Granted, while the 1950s appeared drowning in the various sorts of inequality, oppression, repression, and abuse you listed, compare that to the generation before and the one before that. Compare it to how it was in the the 1850s, and we've witnessed progress at a level and pace never seen anywhere anytime in history.

On top of that, in our gallant effort to rebuild the tattered world left in Hitler's wake, from the VOA to the Marshall Plan, etc, we've exported modernization and egalitarianism, again, in ways not seen prior. The strongest entity to have ever existed, technological and cultural innovator that in comparison makes the rest of pre-WWII Earth look like a bunch of cannibalistic monkeys flinging their own poo to make their mark on World culture and history.

Why the USA though? Why didn't our motherland, England, do the same? Why haven't our neighbors on this continent blessed with much of the same resources either? Why is it that our bloody urge to conquer under the rabid banner of Manifest Destiny ulitmately lead us to domesticate our barbaric brethren on the other side of vast oceans rather than strip them clean like any other conqueror? We OWNED this planet, and instead we gave. Can you think of any other to have done so since Cyrus the Great 2600 years ago?

Europeans, Asians, Africans, South Americans, Catholics, Russian Orhtodox, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucianist - even Atheistic Communists, with their international brotherhood of man merely conquered and pillaged, rendering entire countries into mere drones.

What we have wrought was not despite the dominant religion, but BECAUSE of it. The American Anglo-.Protestant view of itself as custodian has lead it to become a giving one, as opposed to its predeccesors. It evolved on its own, unlike the rest of this humanary stew EVER.

Our moral code, our drive, our culture, our altruism, our modern world - born out of that religion.

This thread is equating the 1950's to Leave it to Beaver episodes. That wasn't reality in the 50's.
1. The crime rate was much higher then than it is today. Crime at all levels has dropped.
2. Incest, rape, wife beating, child beating, all went unreported and all were much higher than today.
3. Education levels were much lower. Youth today are much better educated
4. A much larger percentage of the population today, have 4yr degrees
5. Women were not allowed to hold important positions (jobs) for the most part
6. Blacks were kept in their place and (jobs) held from them.
7. Blacks could not get special financing and other loans, to help them benefit the same way whites did after WWII

Much of the problems you guys listed above are byproducts of the huge amount of progress we've seen. Women don't need men anymore. They can earn their own money. That is why we have higher divorce rates today.

I don't believe for a second we're becoming a worse society than we used to be. The world gets better every day, even with Trump as Prez. He's a blip in time and we will learn from this.

I can't understand how someone on the right who believes in personal responsibility cannot fathom a world without a God and personal responsibility as the main driver of decency. I don't need a God to know how to treat people. Judging from the past, it has never worked very well to use one.

""Why not? Just go to church on Sunday, eat your cracker and be absolved for the week. Makes everything better doesn't it?"

Good! You see the hypocrisy in man's religions. If you dare...follow that thought. Maybe you'll discover that God has nothing whatsoever to do with any of it."

Cringe protestant

Don't get off topic.

America has a STRONG history of a progressive income tax rate and has used a much stronger form of it all the way up to about 1974. It's one of the primary things that made America, America. Helping the little guy with a hand up so that they too could succeed. We've moved away from that and more toward what's mine is mine and keep your hands off.

God is not needed to know it is wrong to cheat on your wife. Believing in God does nothing to prevent people from cheating on their wife as many do it every day. Something I've never done by the way.

I don't need a God to know not to steel and feel sorry for anyone who does.

All those things you listed, are committed by faithful church goer's every day. Likely, some unfaithful meet at church!

Why not? Just go to church on Sunday, eat your cracker and be absolved for the week. Makes everything better doesn't it?

There is nothing wrong with believing in God. There is something really wrong with thinking a God is needed to know right from wrong.

The reason we have laws is to establish punishment for people who do wrong. People shouldn't need laws to know right from wrong.

China has added 3 American middle classes in size to its society over the last 30yrs. Deaths by war are far, far lower today than in the past. Yes, much of the world is getting better.

In 1950, 51% of the population did not receive a high school education.
0 ups, 5y
"Of what value is a "high school education" when the graduates are barely literate, and cannot do basic math...?

I'll take 51% of the population that knows far, far more than the average high school "graduate" today."

Heard on NPR today that a pessimistic attitude likely means you won't live as long as an optimist. You might want to chill out a bit and take things a little easier.

Has there ever been an older generation that felt a younger generation worthy? I doubt it. Your attitude has lived on for countless generations. I'm around enough young people to know they are way more intelligent and informed than people of my age were when we were young. Teen pregnancy is also way down.

One only needs look to the church to see what was kept hidden for years until people started coming forward.

I use to think Obama was proof we've come a long way and that blacks can do anything in America today. Since Trump we've seen the social ramifications from the Obama presidency vs the Trump presidency and it's a clear indicator that America is still very racist. There is no better indicator today that brings out the hatred for all to see. A hated black man trying to improve things is trumped by a loved ignorant white man trying to tear it out by the roots no matter who it hurts or what the policy was. Ignorant, racist people see things in black and white.

Yes, kids are much better educated today and vastly outstrip the young people of the past in knowledge.

For some reason I cannot reply to your comments.

You're giving only your personal opinions. I know of no, "echo chamber" that mirrors my thoughts left or right because they are a combination of both. I'm a fiscal conservative that believes most conservatism related to social interests, is racially driven so I stay away. I've vote for the individual, not by party and always have. These are my thoughts.

You're twisting my words to suit your narrative. Obama is surely hated, just look at your comments. I saw very few instances while he was in office that I did not agree with.

Crime in the fifties was worse than today? Are you okay? Youth today are better educated? LOL maybe in the worst backwater dregs. Do you know how low the math proficiency rate is now?

Women not needing men, and vice versa, is... good? High divorce rates are good?

In 1950, 51% of the population did not graduate high school and 6% had 4yr degrees.
In 2009, only 12% did not graduate high school and 32% have 4yr degrees.

The improvement is astounding.

Yes, strangled with debt for a degree that can't get you a job, that can't help you buy a house is wonderful improvement. I think back to the day where you could pay your college debt with a summer job and buy a house for your young family and just shudder.

"strangled with debt for a degree that can't get you a job, that can't help you buy a house is wonderful improvement. I think back to the day where you could pay your college debt with a summer job and buy a house for your young family and just shudder"

All those things are true but none of those things are due to young people. It's mechanization, the ever changing requirements of work, the belief in trickle down economics and increase costs loaded onto the middle class including healthcare costs and a 500% increase in college costs. Back in 1950 people went to college relatively expense free but those people today are telling our young to suck it up and pay 7% interest on their college debt.

"They have degrees, but no education." That's your opinion.
Sure, people in the 50's knew how to work on the farm. That knowledge won't provide food for people today.

"I'd take a non-graduate from the 50s over a graduate from 2019."
The guy from the 50's wouldn't last a week in 2019. Wouldn't know how to use a computer, how to type, how to create a readable paper, how to do anything beyond manual labor. Most of them would do well to earn minimum wage today. The rate of improvement is partial cause for the gun violence we see today. There are many people who can't deal with modern societal pressures but would have been fine in 1950 with fewer people, with less human interaction and less demand on the mind. Another negative byproduct of our successes.

So he can change oil. That's a great minimum wage job. Back in 1950 he could raise a family with a single income with such a job.

"The graduate from 2019 can tell you how many genders there are and call you a bigot Nazi"

You're showing your own difficulty with our modern world and the demands it puts on people. Another improvement in the rights of citizens to be who they are. I get where you're coming from though. Just was listening to NPR and a story suggesting that you should always ask your wife if it is okay to give her a kiss as you leave for work and always ask for permission for sex. Some have taken the whole thing too far.

I never said divorce was a good thing. I said it was a bad thing but it is caused by positive changes in American culture. A byproduct. I was wrong about rape. I forgot that since Trump was elected we've seen a spike in rape.

Murder isn't the only crime. Everything else is higher today, though down from late 70's - 80's. And you don't know what didn't go reported then or now.
