But it is secular, as well as given to ever rampant consumerism and materialism, self indulgent to the point that the craving for hedonist extremes is practically outpacing the limits of imaginable depravity.
Granted, while the 1950s appeared drowning in the various sorts of inequality, oppression, repression, and abuse you listed, compare that to the generation before and the one before that. Compare it to how it was in the the 1850s, and we've witnessed progress at a level and pace never seen anywhere anytime in history.
On top of that, in our gallant effort to rebuild the tattered world left in Hitler's wake, from the VOA to the Marshall Plan, etc, we've exported modernization and egalitarianism, again, in ways not seen prior. The strongest entity to have ever existed, technological and cultural innovator that in comparison makes the rest of pre-WWII Earth look like a bunch of cannibalistic monkeys flinging their own poo to make their mark on World culture and history.
Why the USA though? Why didn't our motherland, England, do the same? Why haven't our neighbors on this continent blessed with much of the same resources either? Why is it that our bloody urge to conquer under the rabid banner of Manifest Destiny ulitmately lead us to domesticate our barbaric brethren on the other side of vast oceans rather than strip them clean like any other conqueror? We OWNED this planet, and instead we gave. Can you think of any other to have done so since Cyrus the Great 2600 years ago?
Europeans, Asians, Africans, South Americans, Catholics, Russian Orhtodox, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucianist - even Atheistic Communists, with their international brotherhood of man merely conquered and pillaged, rendering entire countries into mere drones.
What we have wrought was not despite the dominant religion, but BECAUSE of it. The American Anglo-.Protestant view of itself as custodian has lead it to become a giving one, as opposed to its predeccesors. It evolved on its own, unlike the rest of this humanary stew EVER.
Our moral code, our drive, our culture, our altruism, our modern world - born out of that religion.
