Genocides in the US-
1. Slavery- Part of the definition includes "attempted to kill in whole or in part" a people. The slave trade killed 6 to 10 for every 1 enslaved. Slaves also had an infant mortality rate double that of free people.
2. Genocide vs Natives-
California Indian genocide killed up to 270,000 and was carried out by vigilante militias, often paid by the state of CA. This remains unknown by most Americans, Californians perhaps most of all.
Forced removal in the Trail of Tears killed up to a third of the 5 Tribes.
Mass killing of the buffalo, ordered by the US Army, to starve out Plains tribes. Using starvation as a weapon of war is part of the definition of genocide.
Dozens of other massacres.
Genocides carried out or collaborated with by US gov't-
1. Nixon vs Cambodia- >500,000 deaths by indiscriminate bombing of civilians in a neutral nation.
2. Reagan vs Mayan Indians in Guatemala- 200,000 deaths carried out by the Guatemalan army, trained, armed, and supplied by Reagan, who publicly defended the dictatorship.
Genocides ignored-
1. Haiti- 170,000 killed by Napoleon. Jefferson ignored it and helped to diplomatically isolate Haiti for decades.
2. The Holocaust- FDR knew all about it by Nov 1942. He refused to aid or halt it. By offering refuge or bombing rail depots and bridges, perhaps 1/10 might have been saved.
3. Cambodia again-The bombing campaign also led to the Khmer Rouge coming to power. Nixon and then Ford, Carter, and Reagan not only ignored this genocide. They diplomatically supported the KR as a counter to North Vietnam, and condemned Vietnam when it invaded and halted the genocide.
4. Bangladesh-Nixon ignored up to 3 million deaths caused by Pakistan's dictator Aya Khan. US diplomats informed him and protested, and were fired or demoted. Nixon even sent a nuclear armed aircraft carrier to try and (unsuccessfully) intimidate India from intervening and ending genocide.
5. East Timor-A third of the population killed
