made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Seeing that it looked fine while I was making the meme, it does not look fine after I generated the thing. So here is the spam part with more clarity.

THANK YOU! Geesh... That would have been handy long ago. I wonder how long it's been an option? And see now, someone was complaining that we meme about new features. I always put it out there so folks will know! Maybe I'll out this up if you don't plan to.

By all means, go ahead :) And glad to help! I just found out recently when I clicked to enlarge a pic on someone else's meme and it was HUGE! (Not "Hyooj", lol). Check out the post I replied to here;

Also I forgot to say, that option has been there as long as I've been on IMGflip, I just didn't actually find out what it did until recently.

I have never noticed it before. So weird too, because I am always choosing more options for adding text boxes.

I've noticed more of this happening once they removed the comment timer. I've always told those who complained about the comment timer the reason they have it is it cuts down on the amount of spam left by bots. Once they took it off, we get more spam.

I noticed it before that. They aren't commenting multiple times on any particular meme, but rather single comments on every meme they see.

I noticed neither of those accounts have gotten very far (in terms of getting many comments in. It's a total of nine comments between the two of them. I wonder what kind of user experience they were having ;)

I am sure they are spamming elsewhere too. Probably running on a tight schedule. At any rate, it would be nice to see them go. :)

Andrew, could you please go here and shed whatever light you may have? Curiosities abound. imgflip.com/i/34pgaq?nerp=1562070449#com3388007

I noticed the correlation with removing the comment timer as well. Strangely, the comment timer is still in full effect for all the users who actually spam (since they always have low reputation anyway), so they still get limited very quickly and the total amount of spam is small. Perhaps there are users of the site paying attention to changes who also run spam companies... ha

It could be that's what's happening.

Too true. Timer rarely cut into me and it has a use.

Use the can logo for the flag! Or is that a trademark infringement?

Hmmm... would it be? I mean the wouldn't be making money off of it.

Thanks.... I must have missed that. That is indeed spam in its purest form.
I don't know how quickly moderators respond to flagging comments, but being a former moderator of a very big community, I know from experience that allowing non-moderators to delete comments easily leads to abuse. Deleting messages that are perfectly fine, but the deleter didn't like the statement, and that can lead to big flame wars.
As long as we can be sure people only delete spam, it looks alright to me... But I hope you understand my skepsis on this.

It's cool. I don't always go in and read the first comments either.

And you are exactly right about that. People would be deleting for spite or whatever childish reason. I don't think just anyone ought to be able to delete comments for that reason. I flagged some yesterday that seem to still be hanging around. I just think we should be able to flag it AS spam, and not just a flag with no specifics. That way maybe they will see multiple spam flags and do something.

Yeah, some reasons to flag comments would indeed be great.
What I also experienced with spammers is this... No matter how well you try to lock up your site against spam, if your site is popular enough (which imgflip certainly is), the more eager spammers will be to bypass all protection measures you took.
Of course, if the site developers can deal with the current spam and block it out, we'll be free of spam for awhile... That is already worth a lot.
Here too I speak of experience (and after deleting terabytes full of spam, I know how spammers can be).

The worst is a spam BOT. I have seen so many times some poor soul clicked on some stupid link and their account would spam against their will. I do not click links for that reason.
2 ups, 5y,

What makes it worse is that spammers actually don't expect ANYBODY to click the links they spam, but to make the spider bots of search engine like Google and Bing see them making them score high in the search results. Most search engines already have taken measures to see through this idiocy, but that didn't keep spammers from doing that, and sometimes they even manage to fool the search engines in the process.
Problem is that there are no international laws, and the spammers always act from a country that has no law treaties with the countries they primarily target and boom, nobody can sue them. I guess they cleverly exploited the weakness of a free internet. Problem is that limiting that freedom now would potentially harm many legal projects and some of them pretty big.... And another problem... Spamming is relatively cheap to do... Yeah many sites set over $10,000 fine per sent message, but rarely such fines can actually be enforced.

Figures....

Wow. I wasn't aware of what you mention there in the first paragraph. Makes sense though. And the international law (or lack thereof) is the biggest issue. There is no real way to stop these folks.

A trick I've seen a lot when I was a community moderator, was forum posts that originally looked like valid discussions, quite often even related to what the forum was about, and that they edit the forum post 2 (or more) months later and remove the original discussion and replace it with a spam message. After all, they only wanted to fool search engine spider bots, and since months old forum posts are rarely seen by users, they are not very likely to be reported, and moderators won't easily see them either. Spiders are still likely to pick them up, though. This shows how clever spammers are.

And you're correct. There is no real way to stop them.

Now that's going above and beyond. That may be why some sites I have seen only allow a post to be edited for a limited time, say within an hour of the post.
1 up, 5y
Very likely one of the reasons, but not the only reason. I've also seen users who post troll messages, get a nasty reply from a user telling them they'll tell a moderator (or admin), and the troll quickly deleting or editing the post to act innocent and make the outraged user look like the troll in stead. This kind of abuse is also one of the reasons, that and indeed the spam trick I described above. The limited time is mostly enough to correct any typos in your messages when you clicked "send" too quickly indeed. And indeed, it is going above and beyond... It's incredible how smart people can get when they want to do some "evil", eh?
