You have to admit that alot of the older dems have severely shifted their positions over the last 10-15 years. Now I'm not saying that people can't change their views but the saying 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks' is largely true, so it seems like pandering for votes in alot of cases.
Having said that, it wasn't that long ago Trump was a democrat ;)
