windows 10 is pretty decent, just takes some getting used to. I've heard 8 is sort of a pain though...

I tried 10 and despised it. It's the visual aspect that I hated the most. It looked so chaotic to me. I guess it's neither here nor there now though. I'll have to figure something else out before the deadline.

I hate the fact Microsoft is so shameless they actually bundled a keystroke logger in Windows 10. Yep, your OS sends what you type to Redmond WA.

Supposedly you can deactivate it, but 99% won't because that's the default setting. Anti-spyware was designed to prevent shit like that, and now M$ actually builds it in. Evil shits >:-[

Riker eyeroll | I HEARD COMPLAINTS ABOUT THAT | image tagged in riker eyeroll | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
That takes some kind of spine to do. As if shoving windows 10 up peoples butts while they were sleeping weren't bad enough, they included something shady like that. I admit I should just get a new lap top altogether. I have had this one since 2012. It still works great. But It's beat up pretty good. LOL

Do people even use computers anymore? Everyone has tablets or phones.

Many people on this site. If you want to do any amount of editing a laptop or pc is definitely the way to do it. Smartphones or tablets are not always the appropriate tool. I use my phone rarely for anything other than texts, phone calls, or taking photos.

Yep, I use a tablet for this site and I can't edit things like I want to. There isn't any good apps for it. I'm too lazy to use my laptop. Lol

Seems to be the popular choice here!

I switched to Ubuntu (Linux) on my laptop years ago. I have a partitioned system, so most of it is Linux, with a small partition for Windows programs that aren't available for Linux. I hate what they did to Windows. I also use LibreOffice, which is like the old Word before that dumbass ribbon. Linux can sometimes be a hassle for some things, but I like it better Windows.

Just installed Ubuntu today and now I want to shoot myself. Can't get the windows partitions or whatever it is. Mighty just go buy a new laptop and smash this one with a hammer.

When you installed Ubuntu there should have been an option to set the partition size. Gosh, Nixie, I feel like I talked you into this. I am sorry it hasn't been a good experience for you. I can tell you that the Ubuntu community has a lot of support online, and they may those here on Imgflip who can help you. I know that in the beginning, I had that feeling of "Oh no, what did I do," but after a little time when I got the hang of it, I really like it. I wish I could do more to help.

I do not blame you! I just felt like venting about it. I discovered after install while searching for a fix that apparently there is a bug where upon install Ubuntu wipes the partitions. I think I'm just going. To buy a new laptop. LOL

If it helps, This is the little engine that could. I have had this thing for about 7 years. I was already considering laying it to rest. It's in sad looking shape, though it does run well.

....It might be time to retire your trusted friend. Actually, processing speed has improved quite a bit since 2012. You will still be stuck with regards to an OS. Mostly likely it will be Windows. I haven't heard of the bug you mentioned, and I have upgraded twice. I currently run 18.04, with no problems. I would definitely do a lot of research about this before taking any more action with Ubuntu.

I figure I won't use it for my main computer. It is still a good machine. I had a Gateway before this which went black the day after the warranty expired. It seems HP makes a reliable product. Or at least they did 7 years ago. LOL...I am going to see if I can find someone who is more computer literate to perhaps retrieve some of my lost data, or figure out if these partitions can be recovered. It seems there is always some way they can do these impossible things at the very least with some small result. I am just kicking myself now. Should have backed everything up. I have some files I already had saved to a flash drive. None of that is accessible on this laptop anymore, but I can at least recover those items in the next laptop.

All this drama aside, I don't dislike Linux. I do think people should be given a better warning about these potential problems though. I have learned a good lesson.

No it should be, after 10 years of support, windows 11 is nearing the end.

My laptop came with Vista, lol :-)
I’ve long since replaced it with Ubuntu, a free linux operating system.
The main computer has both Windows 10 and Ubuntu on separate drives.
I hate Windows 10 :-(

Okay... let me see if I can find a better way of saying it... You know on a cell phone how they have android for example? Well Windows is kind of the same sort of thing. Only for laptops and desktops.

I have never tried it. I am looking at what ever options are out there. I have quite a while to decide thankfully. What's the best thing about Windows XP?

XP was an OS inthe early 2000's and is no longer supported. It was a popular OS because it was powerful, intuitive, and it worked well. Personally, I don't Microsoft anymore, though "trusting" any company these days is admittedly dangerous to say the least. I use Ubuntu, which is a "flavor" of Linux. I would suggest reading about Linux before jumping in, as Linux can be more technical than what Windows users are accustomed to. But that said, I'll never go back to Windows.

Thanks for the info and the warning. I am also leery these days. Especially with phone apps, but also with my laptop. You just never know anymore.
