What backs the US dollar?

The answer is nothing except an agreement with Saudi Arabia. Nixon made an agreement with Saudi Arabia that we would provide military protection and services for them and in exchange they would only sell their oil for US dollars. That means anyone who wants to buy Saudi oil has to buy US dollars first.

That agreement is literally the only thing that validates US currency. Trump is trying to change that but it's not easy. The agreement still needs to hold. If it suddenly came to an end then the US dollar would become worthless, especially with this multi trillion dollar debt hanging over us. Hyperinflation could, and probably would, occur and the rent for a cheap apartment could turn into millions of dollars.

Of course that would never be allowed to happen. We'd immediately go to war with Saudi Arabia and they would use their wealth and influence to hire militaries to protect them which would kick off ww3.

Ww3 is one bad decision away.
