A downvote doesn't do anyone any harm, and can do the site a lot of good. Use the downvote button well: that's what it's for.

That's a whole different issue. I'm talking about normal users using the downvote button wisely.

I think it can take a meme from featured to submitted before other people have a chance to see it and form their own opinion. I think too many people downvote simply because they disagree with the political opinion.

Partially true, but all true. Good memes get effectively killed and or knocked back to submission all the time, as well as perfectly good positive comments all because some troll(s) decide they don't like a certain user. So it's bogus to say downvotes do no harm. Yes, they can do good in the sense that the offensive and inappropriate stuff can be somewhat depressed. But it takes a great toll on good memers and good memes too.

Being fairly new to IMGFLIP, I'm at a loss to explain why my memes would often get thousands of views...99 upvotes, etc. and now anything I submit, in the FUN section especially, gets one or two upvotes on average. I don't think it's just an anomaly. So now I see how this could happen--being targeted by trolls who downvote everything a certain user puts out there? I wouldn't be surprised if this exists. Because there is such juvenile vindictiveness on this site (one only needs to peruse the POLITICS section to become aware of that). Where are the adults in this daycare center???

Yeah, it's sad that people get so vindictive and spend so much time trolling and downvoting others. Or using alts to upvote themselves. But it is what it is. For the most part people here are fun and positive toward each other, outside of the political stuff. As for views, it's definitely weird how some memes get relatively few views, yet a decent number of upvotes, yet others get so many views and so few upvotes. Remember though that number of views doesn't mean that many differently users have views it. Each time someone even scrolls past it or clicks on it to respond to a comment etc, that counts as a new view. So let's say 10 users each view or scroll past a meme 10 times, the memes gets 100 views.
