Technically Taiwan is China. When the communists took over, the nationalist govt. and a ton of refugees fled to Taiwan to set up a government in exile. I believe they still claim that mainland china is theirs, just as the communist chinese on the mainland claim that Taiwan is theirs. The chinese civil war never formally ended, they just stopped shooting each other. The official name of Taiwan is the Republic of China, and their ruling party is still Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang.
