I've watched a Channel 4 documentary on food, and what food we like best and why. Why do we like meat more than lettuce? Because meat has more of that yummydelicious nutrition and minerals and everything, but lettuce doesn't have bollocks compared to it! Why are some PLANTS poisonous, but no MEAT is? Because those poisonous disgusting plants are eaten by herbivores, those herbivores digest those plants, crap out the nasty stuff, and concentrate the good stuff into delicious meat for us to eat! And now you're telling me that plants are healthier than meat? Man, you never tried a deadly nightshade berry, then!

They are. If there are any that I posted to the main board, they almost certainly were initially replies to somebody else's bull about vegans. I see attacks on vegans at least once or twice a week. I have never posted anything of such low caliber at carnivores however, particularly since a few decades ago I used to be one myself.

Afaik, the words Vegan and Vega, have a common root in Proto-Indo-European word "Weg-", meaning "to be strong, to be lively." But the similarity between the words is irrelevant, in that regards. Vega is a direct modernization of the name Wega, whereas Vegan is just a pop culture corruption of "Vegetarian", which in turn has precursors in the form of "Vegetare" and "Vegere", which in turn share the "Vega" common root "Weg-".

Las Vegas, for instance, literally translates to "City of Plantations", a spanish vega is literally a plantation. But the star Vega, on the other hand, has probably nothing to do with plantations, but rather means "lively", because it's such a bright star.

In other words, if the word "vegan" was used correctly, it would be a person who's "of the plantations", not someone "who eats only vegetables".

I asked ten spanish-speakers down there who didn't know que es una vega. The online info I found suggested meadows instead, which would make more sense, there weren't any plantations in Vegas that I knew of.

You seen a lot of meadows down in the Mojave Desert? But you're right, a Vega can be a plantation, but it's not exclusively one. Vega literally refers to a green grassy field or valley (such as a meadow, plantation, or otherwise).

The vegas of "Las Vegas" simply happen to be plantations, given the fact that the city is built on top of a dead, dry desert region. And the greeneries had to be introduced artificially. ;)

Btw, the word "plantation" in this context is meant figuratively, not literally. Plantation is what you call an large irrigated area of greenery, which is typically used for farming and selling crops. But in the rare case of Las Vegas, these areas are used for tourism instead, hence the large number of Casinos, gardening, and general beautification, rather than large patches of monoculture.

But City of Meadows works too, as long as you understand its figurative. ;)
