Just adding my two cents....
From a military perspective you only stand when outside in the presence of the colors during the anthem, reveille or retreat. Go to a military base near you at dawn and dusk and watch the soldiers. If they are outside they stop face the flag or music depending on obstructions stand attention and salute. Typically at 5pn everyone runs for a building because you don't have to salute the colors if your indoors.
This is my take on the difference between the two. Outdoors in the presence of the colors (flag) you salute. Indoors you don't.

True. And now that I'm deploying in a few weeks, I've noticed and it's bugging the hell out of me.

It's a ceremonial tribute. I'm pretty sure there is an Army Reg for when the flag is presented indoors. Like at funerals when taps is played indoors. But we are talking about civilians, most of the spectators probably haven't served, but know somebody who has.. these protests which they have a right to should be conducted elsewhere like at a police event or at a city council meeting. If 40 pro football players showed up on Baltimore city council and took a knee that would be newsworthy. Doing it in a place where half of the audience will be offended is like signing yourself up for unemployment. If the footballers want a statement made they should do the former.sorru for the long response.

That's actually written better than I've been able to figure out my stance on it. I never served but agree they have the right to do it, but I'm not a fan of them doing it.

I would love to see the team show up at PD and take a knee. That would better express their stance and the uninformed wouldn't have insta-rage over it.

I have worked at a military base, and if we are working at 5pm when they play the anthem, we are asked to stop what we are working on, face in the direction the sound is coming from, and stand at attention, even if we are indoors. Many of us will do this, although depending on what I am doing at the time I may not do it right away.

In a civilian occupation? If so, That's awesome because i know most (newer soldiers anyway) will look at their watch at 4:55 and start running for a building when "retreat" starts playing. I guess because it longer than the others.

Yep, as a civilian in a civilian occupation. That actuallly confuses me on the aspect of being in a building or not. We are requested to do it no matter where we are. I was even doing it 90ft in the air in a hanger while working on a lift. Do they pull over and stop if in a vehicle? That is something else we are told to do.

Serviceman are supposed to. I don't know what civilians are expected to do. I would imagine it is up to your employer ( the DoD contractor) to set the standards. I know kids will stop playing on playgrounds on post when it comes on.

Blatant disrespect for the flag, "fighting" for something that has been proven to not be true.

Lol!I think it would still be considered "outdoors." Not outdoors, but in a large open area. I'm speaking on military terms, since I was in the Army for a bit and had to learn all this.
