Just sharing my experiences as a newbie

It's hard to believe that most people can't figure this simple piece of logic! Ok, quit screwing around, back to work, dammit! Ha ha! :)

To begin with, people here are extremely finicky, there isn't a day that peoples tastes are the same here. I do what the hell I want! Lmao! Make them, submit them, no expectations, that's the best way! (That was the advice Socrates gave me and it's definitely the best I ever got for being here)

I saw a (serious) "advice meme" that said straight out don't expect to get many upvotes if you use your own images. If at all possible, use one of the "popular" templates--the ones near the beginning of the "all templates" list.

That's why you see the same templates being used so much. People look through "other captions for this meme" and often upvote them. If you are using your own template that won't happen.

Also, if you "Add image" to ANY template, Imgflip doesn't consider it that template any more, so it won't be included in the "other captions" group.

One other thing is that no matter how good the picture match is, each template has a "standard" theme associated with it, e.g., "Bad Luck Brian", "Overly Attached Girlfriend". If YOUR meme isn't related, a common reaction is "Ugh! That's not the theme!"

Know what you mean, which is why knowing your audience is important.

But there is also laughs to be taken from using standard templates differently. Which is what I am doing with this BLB here. Certainly not everyone's taste.

I will not limit my creative expression for views and points! Of course I could *redirect* my creative energy more toward...lol <shrug> I get my 1st frontpager. It hits the top. Grumpy cat being negative. So...ya. :D

According to most standard templates also allows your meme to feature faster than custom templates (but not always the case with me tho).

Standard templates carry with them standard reader expectations which can work for and against you depending on how you use them just like what you said below.

New templates does take some experience to get right. DashHopes does that well. Each time he posts up a new template you can be sure it goes to the top of the front page and there will be others using it too.

To tell you the truth, though, I have more fun in the comments. 10 upvotes on a comment is like 100 votes on a submission for me.

Yes greed is real but front page is much too fickle.
