I was born in 1965 so my formative years were the '70s. I have some hip-hop but must confess it's just a handful. I just don't see why, firstly, people have to consciously limit what they listen to, and secondly, feel the need to denigrate the music they don't care for. Fine - don't listen to it - but all music is legitimate.

I grew up in the late 70's to early 80's, and I am OK with rap. I suspect most people who complain about rap have never really listened to it.

This is usually the case. If I wanted to shame them and make them feel stupid, I'd recommend people like The Roots. Talib Kweli. Mos Def. Blackalicious. Lauryn Hill.

I could keep going, but the level of creativity and skill level musically they perform at, matches or EXCEEDS any Rock Artist's. We have a joke we throw out to folks like these:

I can guarantee our "poetry" is better than anything you ever wrote in any English class you ever took. There's a big difference between commerical/radio rap, and HipHop. But what we do is rap-- don't be mad because you're not clever or creative enough to do it yourself. That's called jealousy.

I agree. I am old and I still like rap. I don't listen to it much anymore, but still occasionally enjoy.

if it's old rap, then it's good because poetry is involved, now its like if it rhymes, it's ok.

The next time you watch The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, take a long, hard look at his in-house band. THAT'S HipHop. That's the Roots. And they "rap" and make music you'll never be able to, in your lifetime.

Yeah. I saw them once about 20 years ago, and The Orb around the same time. I saw Aphex Twin a couple times; or should I say I 'saw' him, because he kept himself hidden for the most part while playing his stuff. :P

Oh my gosh, I love The Orb as well! That is so cool when you see artists like that. I haven't heard much music by Aphex Twin, but I've heard he's pretty good.
You've heard of Kraftwerk, right? They use (I think similar) types of instruments of that of Orbital. I'm such a huge electronic music person, I've even made some of my own songs. You can find me on SoundCloud, and my name there is CarbonTHWACK. ;)

I'm old so of course I've heard of Kraftwerk. :) Nowadays my tastes in the electronic direction trends towards noise and even harsh noise. Merzbow, Incapacitants, and Hijokaidan, etc. etc. I'll check out your stuff on SoundCloud soon. For some crazy reason today they expect me to do work...

Awesome! I've heard some really harsh noise in Electronic music today, especially on Soundcloud. ;) Speaking of which, thanks! They aren't as harsh noises (yet) as some of the songs I have heard. :P
