I was born in 1965 so my formative years were the '70s. I have some hip-hop but must confess it's just a handful. I just don't see why, firstly, people have to consciously limit what they listen to, and secondly, feel the need to denigrate the music they don't care for. Fine - don't listen to it - but all music is legitimate.

I grew up in the late 70's to early 80's, and I am OK with rap. I suspect most people who complain about rap have never really listened to it.

This is usually the case. If I wanted to shame them and make them feel stupid, I'd recommend people like The Roots. Talib Kweli. Mos Def. Blackalicious. Lauryn Hill.

I could keep going, but the level of creativity and skill level musically they perform at, matches or EXCEEDS any Rock Artist's. We have a joke we throw out to folks like these:

The only up and coming "Rockstars" left in the world play Rockband in the comfort of their homes.

90% of rap is just people saying the n-word.

I can guarantee our "poetry" is better than anything you ever wrote in any English class you ever took. There's a big difference between commerical/radio rap, and HipHop. But what we do is rap-- don't be mad because you're not clever or creative enough to do it yourself. That's called jealousy.

I agree. I am old and I still like rap. I don't listen to it much anymore, but still occasionally enjoy.

if it's old rap, then it's good because poetry is involved, now its like if it rhymes, it's ok.

That's funny......

The next time you watch The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, take a long, hard look at his in-house band. THAT'S HipHop. That's the Roots. And they "rap" and make music you'll never be able to, in your lifetime.

Is that Orbital? I love Orbital! ;D
reply
1 up, 1 reply
Yeah. I saw them once about 20 years ago, and The Orb around the same time. I saw Aphex Twin a couple times; or should I say I 'saw' him, because he kept himself hidden for the most part while playing his stuff. :P
reply
1 up, 1 reply
Oh my gosh, I love The Orb as well! That is so cool when you see artists like that. I haven't heard much music by Aphex Twin, but I've heard he's pretty good.
You've heard of Kraftwerk, right? They use (I think similar) types of instruments of that of Orbital. I'm such a huge electronic music person, I've even made some of my own songs. You can find me on SoundCloud, and my name there is CarbonTHWACK. ;)

I'm old so of course I've heard of Kraftwerk. :) Nowadays my tastes in the electronic direction trends towards noise and even harsh noise. Merzbow, Incapacitants, and Hijokaidan, etc. etc. I'll check out your stuff on SoundCloud soon. For some crazy reason today they expect me to do work...
reply

Awesome! I've heard some really harsh noise in Electronic music today, especially on Soundcloud. ;) Speaking of which, thanks! They aren't as harsh noises (yet) as some of the songs I have heard. :P

I think we can all agree that hiphop is VERY limited art form.

Very.
reply
2 ups, 2 replies
I think I will not only disagree with you, but will call what you just said pretty damn ignorant. The fact of the matter is, you have more people RETIRING from Rock than you have actually making anything critically acclaimed or of any greatness. HipHop will never go away, because it reinvents itself constantly. If anything, ROCK is "very limited" in its art form, because HipHop uses EVERY THING. EVERYTHING. EDM, Drum and Bass, Classical, Jazz, African, Latin...we use it all.

So....no, sir. You couldn't be more wrong.

reply
2 ups, 1 reply
Nah, not really. I'm just kinda done with people calling rap "crap" and "not music." For it being non-musical, it sure is outselling the hell outta all these old codgers' fave bands. I even love some rock, myself. What's funny is...you'll find more hostile Rock fans toward HipHop/Rap, than you will vice versa.
reply
4 ups, 1 reply
Most rap fans don't really get me mad, although I personally don't like it that much, but what pisses me off is those kind of guys that are your vice versa... you know the kind: pants almost down to their knees, seem physically incapable of talking in proper English and not using 10 swear words in a sentence, always either talking about being "in the f-ing hood" or "gay-a** rock music". I'm fine with most other music fans, but guys like that really get on my nerves.
reply
1 up, 1 reply
But that's what I'm saying. I've found Rock fans more openly disrespectful towards Rap and HipHop, than Rap fans towards Rock. We LIKE Rock. We sample the shit outta some of the greatest singles Rock ever produced. In our genre and culture, that's a sign of respect. Most of my friends can name bands and songs they admire.

I'm not saying there aren't little punks dissin Rock. I'm just saying we're generally more open-minded and appreciative of Rock, than they are of us.

Rap is nothing more than spoken word gone bad, in my opinion.

The fact that you called me ignorant only illustrates how narrow your mind [if you have a mind left after listening to rap] truly is.

Run along now, and listen to the same note, pounded over and over again, while some stupid-ass talks so fast no one can understand them.

ACTUALLY...... The last time Rock beat Rap? 2013. Money talks, bullshit walks.
At this point, you got more Rockstars RETIRING and entering the Rock n Roll HOF, than you have actually giving hiphop/rap any stiff competition.

"Those were the good ol' days," eh boys?

For me, honestly, rap is just form of spoken word. It does not really require musical talent, however, I believe old rap has actually something to it, new rap is just another crappy genere.
