Matthew is actually English modern translating of the Greek Mathatias, Luke comes from Lucas, a gentilic, and so on. The original forms of these names were pretty common in that part of the Mediterranean back then.

monsieurdelariviera is right. The names are adapted from their original languages to a (more pronounceable) English translation.

Mark from Marcus (Roman), Peter from Petros (Greek; also means 'rock,' hence 'petrified'), etc. But Thomas is Aramaic and is actually unaltered in English.

OK, Mr. Muslim Name Expert Troll, thanks for that inciteful lesson. Here's a couple for you:

1. It's a meme site, where shit is meant to be funny. There is nothing funnier than Jeff Dunham's Achmed the Dead Terrorist.
2. Please go back and read Raydog's original meme. He was referring to the names of the disciples. They were around waaay before any Muslims climbed out from under their rocks.

Please reread the thread (if you can read). You used the word Muslim first. Furthermore, you tried to correct me not once, but twice. Get a life.
reply

Furthermore, unless you are a total racist bigot xenophobic, there really is no such thing as a "Muslim name" as you put it, just as there is no such thing as a Christian, Jewish, or Buddhist name. Your name doesn't choose your religion, you do.

The heads aren't named, it's just said that blasphemous names are written on them. No names are actually mentioned. The names are there to show the difference between the beast and the lamb from Rev. 4-5

There's a lot of Greek versions of those names. I'd imagine King Jame's scribes did their best to... whiten the bible as much as possibke. Probably why pretty much all depictions of your Jesus are a white guy.

It was before the Arab conquest, so names like that were fairly common.

Really? Where else are they mentioned in that area besides the bible during the time period before the Arab conquest?
reply
1 up, 1 reply
Those names are Anglicized versions of names that were fairly common in the Roman Empire at the time. Mark, for example, is an Anglicized "Marcus" The Arabs came in at about 650 AD or so, and brought names with them like Muhammad, Abu, Ali, and Sayeed.

Not in the Eastern Mediterranean regions where Jesus lived. The last four were native to the Arabian Peninsula, not Galilee.

or why jesus was white
reply
8 ups
Jesus only appeared white in the art of white communities, in black art he was black, Asian communities represented him with Asian features. People developed their own mental image as they related to him and that's how they portrayed him in their art.
reply
7 ups, 6 replies
I've been making that argument for years...there is absolutely no way Jesus was white in that part of the world...especially back then...I don't care what anyone says to try to rationalize that one.

No one knows what Jesus looked like. It obviously doesn't matter, since the Bible doesn't mention it. I don't think it matters that people think Jesus was white.
reply

The Bible does mention him disappearing in the crowd. At the very least, he didn't look distinct. I agree though, appearance doesn't matter, the message does.

It doesn't really matter what color Jesus's human body color was. The Bible never says what Jesus looked like, only that he did not stick out due to his looks. He looked very average.
reply
[deleted]

And very average looking for the middle east is middle eastern looking.
reply

Possibly. He was Jewish, so he could very well have been white also.

because back a long time ago some guy drew a picture of him and claimed it was actually him (can't remember who it was, but it's true) and the image is still used today even though everyone knows it's fake. Obviously, Jesus was not white but middle eastern.
reply
2 ups, 1 reply
and...that and other depictions of Jesus were essentially based on images of pagan gods. Similar to how Christmas and Easter were transformed from pagan celebrations to Christian celebrations to bring Pagans into conformity under one religion.
reply
[deleted]
4 ups, 1 reply
Not necessarily. The festivities of the solstices were reconciled by the Church at some point, but the holidays, at their core, are very different.
reply
3 ups
obviously, that is true, but Constantine basically convinced those in the Roman Empire to stop worshiping the sun and to begin worshiping the Son. The celebration at that time was just a big party so I've read where Pagans worshiped the birth of sun god who was the "official" god of Rome. Constantine was a 'Christian' and wanted Christianity to be the new religion of Rome and essentially gave birth to the roman Catholic church which was likely more about power and control of his empire than Christ.

No one can really argue that He was. Though the bible is unclear about what the people looked like and even how He is described, we can see that he was middle eastern. From Galilee, So He was a middle eastern man, so He was not White. But neither was He Black, or Asian. It's really not a good topic I feel because there are those who divide the believers on this issue.

If i am correct, and i am probably not, modern day names of "Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, Simon & Thomas" came from their names. I'm most likely 100% wrong.
